The devastating forest fires in Los Angeles are almost a week old, and despite the efforts of the fire department and first aid, the flames do not stop.
That is why the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS, Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences) and just decision to delay the announcement of the 2025 Oscar nominations for the second time which was originally scheduled for Thursday, January 17, in consideration of the many Academy members whose lives have been turned upside down by tragedy.
The Academy will extend the voting period for Oscar nominations – which began on Wednesday, January 8 and was to end on Sunday, January 12 – to Friday, January 17; besides, The announcement of the 2025 Oscar nominations will now take place on Thursday, January 23 at 5:30 a.m. PT. They will be televised as is customary, but there will be no press at the hearing.
The date of the 2025 Oscars gala remains unchanged. The prizes will be awarded on Sunday, March 2.
The announcement was made through a press release signed by Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang (via THR).
Additionally, The Oscar nominees luncheon, which was scheduled for Monday, February 10, has been canceled. and the Scientific and Technical Awards, originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 18, have been postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date.
THR adds this information:
“The Academy is trying to find a middle ground between some who seem to feel the show should go on, and others, like actress Jean Smart, who has suggested that awards season activities should be significantly scaled back and funds redirected to relief efforts for those affected by the fires.
“One factor that is often overlooked is the number of people and businesses that are financially dependent on the awards industrial complex, from caterers and drivers to hotel workers and security staff. The Academy itself employs about 1,000 people during the week of the Oscar broadcast.”
