On the panel of The Boys At San Diego Comic-Con 2024, the creator and showrunner of the popular series, Eric Kripke shared with the attendees his reasons behind the return of Jensen Ackles reprising his role as Solder Boy in the fifth and final season.
The character will be a central part of the plot of the final season, and there is a reason for that: Homelander (Anthony Starr).
Kripke explained to GamesRadar at SDCC:
“You know, we realized that we hadn't really explored that much of the father-son relationship between Homelander and Soldier Boy. There's a lot of material there, how Soldier Boy feels about Homelander, how Homelander feels about his father, and so we really wanted to dig deeper into that relationship.”
We saw a bit of this father-son dynamic in the third season of The Boysin the storyline that revealed that Soldier Boy is Homelander's biological father, although Soldier Boy rejected him upon their meeting at Vought Tower.
It seems that this bad start between the two will be left behind in season 5, as they will unite against a common enemy: Billy Butcher (Karl Urban).
Kripke explained:
“Soldier Boy is really motivated to kill Butcher after Butcher betrayed him in Season 3. So he’s a great antagonist, to switch sides and basically, you know, be with the superheroes.”
Following his debut in Season 3, which made him an audience favorite, Soldier Boy did not return for Season 4, except for a post-credits scene in the season finale.
Ackles joined Kripke at SDCC to announce his return for the final season.
The four seasons of The Boys are available on Prime Video. Season 5 is set to premiere in 2026.
