The marketing campaign for the long-awaited film adaptation of the popular 2015 horror video game, Until Dawnfrom PlayStation, started in recent days and continues today with the launch of the first official trailer.
Sony Pictures' Screen Gems shares with the audience the trailer for the project directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle Creation, Lights Out, Shazam), where we are warned that actions have consequences, like a butterfly effect.
The hit horror video game follows eight friends who are trapped together in a remote mountain retreat and discover that they are not alone. Using a high-stakes “butterfly effect” mechanic, players make decisions that affect subsequent gameplay as they try to avoid masked killers, cannibalistic creatures, and discover who is really worth trusting.
The trailer shows us the characters being killed by different monsters, only to come back to life and repeat the same events with slightly different results each time.
The main cast is made up of Ella Rubin (The Idea of You), Michael Cimino (Never Have I Ever), Ji-young Yoo (Expats), y Odessa A'zion (Hellraiser), Maia Mitchell (The Fosters), Belmont Cameli (Based on a True Story, Saved by the Bell), y Peter Stormare (Fargo, John Wick 2).
Rubin plays Clover, a young woman who visits a remote cabin with her friends in pursuit of the disappearance of her sister Melanie (Mitchell). Cimino plays Max, Clover's ex-boyfriend, with Ji-young Yoo as Max's stepsister Megan, A'zion as Clover's friend Nina, Cameli as Nina's boyfriend Abel, and Stormare reprising his role from the video game as the Dr. Alan J. Hill.
The script was written by Gary Dauberman (IT, The Nun, Annabelle), with original draft of Blair Butler (The Invitation, Polaroid).
The film is described as “An R-rated love letter to the horror genre.”
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
“A year after her sister Melanie mysteriously disappeared, Clover and her friends head to the remote valley where she disappeared in search of answers. Exploring an abandoned visitor center, they find themselves harassed by a masked killer and horribly murdered one by one… only to wake up and find themselves again at the beginning of the same night. Trapped in the valley, they are forced to relive the nightmare over and over again, only each time the murderous threat is different, each more terrifying than the last. With hope dwindling, the group soon realizes that they have a limited number of kills left and the only way to escape is to survive until dawn.”
It's important to note that Sandberg's film is not a direct adaptation of the video game, so don't expect to see Josh or Sam, but rather a new group of teenagers in trouble.
Dauberman is producing the adaptation with his company Coin Operated alongside Sandberg, Roy Lee, Mia Maniscalco, Lotta Losten, Asad Qizilbash, and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions. The executive producers are Hermen Hulst and Charles Miller. Screen Gems, PlayStation Productions, Vertigo Entertainment, Coin Operated and Mangata are the production companies.
Until Dawn he plans his theatrical release for April 25, 2025.
