Fraser and Weisz co-starred in two films The Mummy, The Mummy (1999) y The Mummy Returns (2001), based on one of Universal's most historic IPs, dating back to the early 20th century. Both installments were directed by Stephen Sommers.
In the 1999 film, Fraser played Rick O'Connell, an American adventurer and former soldier in the French Foreign Legion, and Weisz played Evelyn Carnahan, an English Egyptologist working at the Museum of Antiquities in Cairo. Over the course of the two films, the couple goes from reluctant partners to a marriage with a young son, battling ancient curses, such as that of the resurrected Egyptian high priest Imhotep. Weisz's character Evelyn dies in the second film after discovering that she is the reincarnation of an Egyptian princess, although Rick eventually revives her.
The two films have a combined global box office gross of more than $400 million.
Later, in 2002, the spinoff was launched The Scorpion Kingstarring Dwayne Johnson. While in 2008, the studio released a third installment, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperorwith the return of Fraser and the absence of Weisz. Her role as Evelyn was played by Maria Bello. At the time, there were conflicting accounts as to why Weisz didn't return for a third film.
In 2017, Universal attempted to revive the franchise with the release of the reboot The Mummy from director Alex Kurtzman, starring Tom Cruise, Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis and Sofia Boutella. The studio's plan was to launch the Dark Universean interconnected universe of monsters, which was ruled out after the failure of the reboot of The mummyalthough… it accumulated a global box office of $403 million dollars, however it was destroyed by critics and the audience.
