“Some things are meant to stay buried.”.
This is the warning with which Warner Bros. revealed the first official trailer teaser of the reboot the The Mummy from the screenwriter and director Lee Cronin (Evil Dead Rise, The Hole in the Ground).
The project launched in December 2024 is a new version of The mummytitled in our region as Possession of the mummywhich will return the story to its horror roots, as the trailer reveals.
The preview takes us straight to chilling chants, peeling skin, insects emerging from bodies, and blood. “What happened to Katie?” is the question that echoes in the trailer. Well, nothing good would be the shortest answer.
Although little was shown in the teaser, it is difficult to deny that this appears to be the most terrifying version of the classic monster in many decades.
Along with the trailer (available below), the studio shared the official synopsis:
“After the record resurrection of EVIL DEAD: THE AWAKENINGwriter-director Lee Cronin returns to one of the most iconic horror stories of all time with a bold and twisted reinterpretation: POSSESSION OF THE MUMMY.
The young daughter of a journalist disappears in the desert without a trace. Eight years later, the devastated family is shocked when the girl returns, and what should be a happy reunion turns into a living nightmare.”
The main cast includes Jack Reynor (Midsommar, The Perfect Couple), Laia Costa (Victoria), May Calamawy (Moon Knight), Natalie Grace (1923), y Veronica Falcon (Imaginary).
The film is co-financed and produced by Atomic Monster of James Wan y Blumhouse of Jason Blum junto a doppelganger de Cronin.
James Wan, Jason Blum and John Keville are the producers of the reboot. Executive producers are Lee Cronin, Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Macdara Kelleher.
Cronin became known to the horror genre fan audience with his feature film The Whole in the Ground (2019), which had its premiere at Sundance that year, and was later released under the A24 label. In April 2023, Cronin premiered in theaters around the world Evil Dead Risea new installment of the franchise Evil Dead which delighted critics and audiences alike. The film grossed $147 million worldwide.

THE MUMMY LEE CRONIN IS NOT THE ONLY MUMMY ON THE WAY
In order to avoid confusion, we tell you that this is not the only project of The mummy under way.
Universal Pictures is developing its own film completely independent of that of Cronin and WB, which, as announced last November, will have the return of Brendan Fraser y Rachel Weisz reprising their roles from the studio's action-adventure franchise, which will be directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin y Tyler Gillett (Scream 5, Ready or Not), with a script by David Coggeshall (Orphan: First Kill). This project will not take into account the third installment of said franchise, Tomb of the Dragon Emperorin which the role of Weisz was played by Maria Bello.
Universal Pictures began the journey of bringing mummies to film in the 1930s. In the late 1990s, the studio launched the franchise The Mummy starring Fraser and Weisz. The 2017 reboot led by Tom Cruise was an attempt to launch an interconnected cinematic universe, but the poor reception at the box office and by critics led the studio to backtrack on it.
Possession of the mummy reaches the cinemas on April 16, 2026 in Mexico and the rest of Latin America, and on April 17 in the United States, distributed by Warner Bros.
