In the original movie, 28 Days Later (2002), Jim awakens from a coma after a bicycle accident, and discovers that England is now a desolate, post-apocalyptic meltdown, thanks to a virus that turned its victims into raging killers.
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
“It has been almost three decades since the rage virus escaped from a bioweapons laboratory and now, even in a ruthlessly enforced quarantine, some have found ways to exist among the infected. One such group of survivors lives on a small island connected to the mainland by a single, heavily defended causeway. When one of the group leaves the island on a mission to the dark heart of the continent, he discovers secrets, wonders and horrors that have mutated not only the infected, but other survivors as well.
Filming concluded principal photography in August 2024, having been filmed primarily on Holy Island, an island off the coast of northeast England. Boyle used a iPhone 15 Pro Max model for filming.
The sequel has a budget of $75 million, making it the largest film project to be shot using a Smartphone.
Anthony Dod Mantle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later) is the director of photography.
Boyle and Garland produce the feature alongside the original's producer Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernie Bellew, with Murphy serving as executive producer.
In addition to becoming a commercial hit, the original 2002 film injected new life into the zombie subgenre, introducing a new form of undead, moving away from those slow walkers, now being ferocious and fast. He also analyzed the fragile nature of society in these pandemic scenarios, which would later be analyzed in other films such as Zombieland, World War Zand the series The Walking Deadamong others.
Sony Pictures set the theatrical release of 28 Years Later for him June 20, 2025.
