The 1990 action classic, Days of Thundercould launch a sequel very soon, if the protagonist Tom Cruise convence a Paramount Pictures.
According to reports from THR, Cruise is holding talks with the studio to give the green light to a sequel to the NASCAR car racing film. Apparently, it would work in a similar way to what happened with Top Gunwhich released the sequel in 2022 Top Gun: Maverick.
Both Top Gun as Days of Thunderare Paramount productions, produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer, and directed by Tony Scott.
Plans to revive Days of Thunder In one way or another they are not new. Previously, Paramount floated the idea of developing a television series for Paramount+, featuring Cruise.
The source explains that the studio is looking for “potential scriptwriters” and looking at Cruise's work schedule, who is scheduled to film Alejandro G. Iñárritu's next project for Warner Bros and Legendary; the development of a Doug Liman film set in space; and the development of a sequel to Top Gun: Maverickconsidered a priority for all those involved.
A studio source familiar with the conversations told THR:
“is talking [con Paramount] on Top Gun y Days of Thunder. It will be the first thing that is finalized in terms of script. It depends on the idea and, ultimately, the script”. (Cruise, sources say, has script approval for all of his projects.)
“I don't think a Days of Thunder sequel is a bad idea. You could have said that rewatching Top Gun was a bad idea. “I wouldn’t rule it out.”
In recent years, we have had the launch of projects about car racing such as the acclaimed Ford v Ferrari (2019) by James Mangold, the drama Ferrari (2023) by Michael Mann that passed without much pain or glory, and F1Joseph Kosinski's Formula 1 project, which is currently filming with a premiere scheduled for 2025.
The difference of Days of Thunder and the feature films mentioned, is that Thunder explore the world of NASCAR.
In days of thunderCole Trickle (Cruise) enters the stressful world of Nascar racing. He is a driver with a hot temper, and this attitude gets him into trouble not only with other drivers, but also with members of his own team.
The film is also remembered as the project where Cruise met his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman. The actress starred in the plot playing a neurosurgeon and love interest of Cole Trickle.
The cast included Cruise, Kidman, Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Cary Elwes, Michael Rooker, and John C. Reilly.
