Robert De Niro returns to the cinema twice playing two gangsters in the crime thriller The Alto Knights of Barry Levinsonpreviously titled Wise Guys. De Niro plays mafia bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, real-life kingpins of New York's Genovese crime family.
The Oscar-winning actor is no stranger to the genre, with one of his first works being Mean Streets (1973) by Martin Scorsese. The following year he joined the sequel The Godfather Part II by Francis Ford Coppola, and again worked with Scorsese on Goodfellas (1990), in addition to other feature films such as A Bronx Tale (1993), Casino (1995), and more recently The Irishman (2019).
Previously, Levinson described the history of The Alto Knights like that of “best friends who become mortal enemies”and about De Niro's dual role, Levinson said: “It's incredible. He is an amazing actor. It was literally like they were two different people, like I was working with two different actors.”
In addition to De Niro, the main cast includes Debra Messing (Will & Grace) as Costello's wife Bobbie, Kathrine Narducci (Godfather of Harlem) as Genovese's wife Anna, and Cosmo Jarvis (Shogun). They accompany them Wallace Langham (Perry Mason), Matt Servitto (The Soprano), Belmont Camels (Saved by the Bell, Until Dawn), Carrie Lazar (Found).
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
“Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, an Italian-American couple who run two different crime families in the mid-20th century. Genovese tried to assassinate Costello in 1957, although he retired from the mafia.”
Levinson and De Niro previously collaborated on Wag the Dog, Sleepers, The Wizard of Lies y What Just Happened.
The script was written by Nicholas Pileggi (Goodfellas, Casino).
Jason Sosnoff and Irwin Winkler are producers, with Mike Drake, Charles Winkler and David Winkler serving as executive producers.
Warner Bros. set the premiere of The Alto Knights in theaters for March 21, 2025.
