Amazon MGM Studios is developing the feature film Verityan adaptation of Colleen Hoover's bestseller.
The most recent news reveals the signings of Anne Hathaway (The Idea of You), Dakota Johnson (Madame Web) y Josh Hartnett (Trap).
The project will be led by Michael Showalter (The Idea of You, The Dropout). Nick Antosca (Channel Zero, The Act) is writing the latest script. Other drafts were previously written by Hoover & Lauren Levine, Hillary Seitz, Angela LaManna, and Will Honley & April Maguire.
The novel is described as a gothic and psychosexual thriller in the vein of Rebecca y Gone Girl.
Amazon will give it a traditional theatrical release, Deadline reported.
The story of Verity follows Lowen Ashleigh, a writer who is on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime.
Jeremy Crawford (Hartnett), husband of bestselling thriller author Verity Crawford (Hathaway), has hired Ashleigh (Johnson) to complete the remaining books in a bestselling series that his wife is unable to finish after a mysterious accident. Arriving at the Crawfords' luxurious estate, Ashleigh slowly learns that things are not exactly what they seem with the discovery of a secret, unfinished manuscript that may reveal chilling admissions about the family's past. As Lowen ingratiates himself with Jeremy and his young son Crew, he must discern whether Verity's writings are simply lurid works of fiction or an ominous warning from a disturbed psychopath.
Hoover's novel was published independently in 2018 and became a bestselling phenomenon, later acquired in 2021 by Grand Central Publishing. In 2023 alone it sold more than a million copies.
The producers of the feature film are Antosca and Alex Hedlund of Eat the Cat, Showalter and Jordana Mollick of Semi-Formal Productions, Hathaway of Somewhere Pictures, Hoover and Shiny Penny Staey Sher of Heartbones Entertainment. Johnson will executive produce alongside Lauren Levine.
Hoover is enjoying a good run since the theatrical release of the adaptation of other of his novels, It Ends With Uswhich had a box office of $346 million worldwide. Since that hit, his other literary works have gained notoriety in the film industry.
Johnson's most recent roles include Madame Web y Dad. We will see it later in Materialists by Celine Song, and Splitsville by Michael Angelo Covino. The actress has already finished filming both films.
We saw Hartnett in Oppenheimer by Christopher Nolan, and in the leading role of Trap by M. Night Shyamalan. He also appeared in an episode of the acclaimed series The Bear y Black Mirror. We will see it soon in Fight or Flight which will be released in 2025. Filming of the drama has already ended The Long Homedirected by James Franco.
Hathaway, for her part, remains extremely busy with multiple projects. His most recent roles are the thriller Eileen, comedy and romance drama She Came to Methe dramatic thriller Mothers’ Instinctand romance The Idea of You. He is in post-production of the epic drama Mother Mary by David Lowery, and waiting to film The Princess Diaries 3, The Devil Wears Prada 2and a new project by Christopher Nolan, among others.
