New Line has just announced the development of a new installment of The Mummyfor which he signed Lee Cronin as screenwriter and director.
Cronin is the writer and director of Evil Dead Rise y The Hole in the Ground.
Atomic Monster of James Wan y Blumhouse of Jason Blum will co-finance and produce the new version of The mummyalong with Cronin's Doppelgängers. The producers will be Wan, Blum and John Keville. Executive producers are Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Macdara Kelleher.
This is the same project that was talked about for the first time last June. In that instance it was described as “a modern version of something ancient.”
The details of the plot are currently hidden in some catapult.
Blumhouse confirmed the news reported by THR, with a post on its official Instagram page, saying: “Something terrifying will be unleashed in 2026.”
This is the first project from the merger of Blumhouse with Atomic Monster.
Universal Pictures began the journey of bringing mummies to film in the 1930s. In the late 1990s, the studio launched the franchise The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. The 2017 reboot led by Tom Cruise was an attempt to launch an interconnected cinematic universe, but the poor reception at the box office and critics led the studio to back down.
Cronin became known to the horror genre fan audience with his feature film The Whole in the Ground (2019), which had its premiere at Sundance that year, and was later released under the A24 label. In April 2023, Cronin premiered in theaters around the world Evil Dead Risea new installment of the franchise Evil Dead which delighted critics and audiences alike. The film grossed $147 million worldwide.
