Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
4 garlic cloves, minced
1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes (or fresh tomatoes, peeled and crushed)
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
1 teaspoon sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
1/4 cup fresh basil or parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Directions
- Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another 1-2 minutes, until fragrant.
- Stir in the crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Mix well to combine.
- Add the dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir to incorporate.
- Bring the sauce to a gentle boil, then reduce the heat to low. Let it simmer uncovered for 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens and the flavors meld together.
- Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. If the sauce is too acidic, add a pinch more sugar.
- Stir in fresh basil or parsley just before serving for a burst of freshness.
- Use the marinara sauce over pasta, as a pizza base, or as a dipping sauce for breadsticks or mozzarella sticks.
