In the billboard on August 8, very diverse proposals arrive, ideal for all tastes. Among the movies that can be seen these days stand out My favorite dessert (Maryam Moghadam and Behtash Sanaeha, 2024), an exciting Iranian production that denounces the work of the moral police and narrates the loneliness in the third age; An unfinished movie (Lou Ye, 2024), an intelligent reflection on cinema and reality in pandemic times; Profesor Stanley that (Damian Harris, 2023), drama based on real facts on the strength of generosity; Indomitable (Daniel Minahan, 2024), a classic romantic triangle with jazz touches and 50s; Mysterious murder in the mountain (Franck Dubosc, 2024), a black comedy with a lot of humor and murders in Jura; and Quinography (Mariano Donoso and Federico Cardone, 2025), documentary portrait of the great Argentine cartoonist Quino and his iconic mafalda.
My favorite dessert (Maryam Moghadam Y Behtash Sanaeha, 2024)
As small as this Iranian production that, in addition to denouncing the activity of the Moral Police (sic) against women, talks about the loneliness of the elderly and stars a very curious and unlikely love story. The strength and freedom of the protagonist – explained because he lived before the Islamic Revolution – is modelic to young girls and I think it has a fairly universal value. I liked and excited, despite being an almost camera piece, with very few characters, dialogues, actions and spaces. Complementary of “Reading 'Lolita' in Tehran” commented a few days ago.
An unfinished movie (Lou Ye, 2024)
There is a lot of truth in this piece of “cinema in the cinema” about the attempt to finish a movie – from ten years ago with problems to pass censorship – and a protagonist who no longer believes too much in history. The filming resumed has to be suspended by the confinement of the COVID-19: from there, with a majority of images captured with mobile, the life of the people is told in the first weeks of 2020: uncertainties, isolation, despair, pain … life has broken and fiction can no longer be made, because the filming of reality replaces any other filming. There are exciting moments like the actor who invites his wife to fall asleep together. Interesting.
Profesor Stanley that (Damian Harris, 2023)
It seems quite expendable to me this film that reconstructs a real story of a boy traumked by the death of his parents, semi -ruined by his family and bound to crime to whom a teacher rescues and supports against the opinion of the environment. Peli of good people and bomb -proof generosity, although one thing is the reality (admirable) and another the film (flat).
Indomitable (Daniel mine, 2024)
The romantic history of a more or less predictable love trio is now seasoned with bisexual relationships in the man and woman who feels attracted despite being brothers -in mediocrity story.
Mysterious murder in the mountain (Franck Dubosc, 2024)
Black comedy set in the Jura in the days before Christmas about a couple who, unnecessarily, tries to hide corpses. Everything is covered with irony and contravalores, there are sympathetic characters and some dialogues with spark, but the piece does not hook. Expendable.
The Argentine cartoonist and “humorist” Joaquín Washing (1932-2020) has gone down as creator of Mafalda, the girl answered that would make accurate diagnoses of the capitalist and authoritarian societies between 1964 and 1973 lay people, its social and political commitment, the exile of the military dictatorship. He looks very good and helps to meet a very unique creator.
