The director Cooper Raiff (Cha Cha Real Smooth, Shithouse) returns this year with the MUBI original series titled Hal & Harperwhich premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.
In addition, Raiff stars in the plot alongside Lili Reinhart (Riverdale) playing Hal and Harper, codependent siblings struggling with all the terrifying changes of adulthood. Mark Ruffalo (Task, Avengers: Endgame) brings his dad to life.
The brothers are forced to reevaluate their lives and their bond when their father announces that he will have another child with his girlfriend, Kate, played by Betty Gilpin (American Primeval).
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
Cooper Raiff arrives Hal & Harperan ironic and emotional 8-episode series about two brothers whose closeness is both their comfort and their curse. Hal (Raiff) and Harper (Lili Reinhart) have built their adult lives together in Los Angeles, bound by a life of inside jokes and shared pain.
When their father (Mark Ruffalo) announces that he is having a baby with his girlfriend, Kate, the brothers are forced to reexamine their past and reflect on the versions of themselves they have carried with them into adulthood. As the lines blur between closeness and codependency, memory and reality, Hal & Harper explores how a bond forged in childhood can shape any subsequent relationship, for better or worse.
The cast also includes Havana Rose Liu, Christopher Meyer (The Sex Lives of College Girs), Alyah Channelle Scott (The Sex Lives of College Girs)y Addison Timlin.
The trailer begins with a glimpse of how close the brothers are, with Hal calling Harper in the wee hours of the morning to ask her to come over for “dessert and fries,” with Harper responding with “McDonald's is too far away,” and Hal sarcastically replying, “Yeah, you're right, and the traffic is terrible right now.” “Well, idiot, where do I pick you up?” she asks, and Hal lifts up her bedroom window and bursts in, saying, “You don't have to. Because I'm already here.”
The 8-episode series was created and directed by Raiff.
Raiff is one of the executive producers with Clemintine Quittner, Reinhart, Timlin and Daniel Lewis. Thomas Hartman produces the series.
Hal & Harper with premieres on MUBI on October 19 with its first two episodes in the United States, France and Latin America. The remaining episodes will premiere weekly on Sundays until November 30.
