Majiko «Pierrot» – what surprises me every day about the Japanese music scene is how many cool, interesting, good female solo singers there are. I've long since stopped counting, especially since I'm still discovering new artists all the time. Majiko, a singer/songwriter who is now 33 years old, has been there for a while. She counts Sheena Ringo among her role models (one of her early EPs is also very similar to her style) and has amassed over 500,000 subscribers on YouTube – due to her emotional voice and her often intense and sometimes poppy music. Her latest single, as usual written and arranged by herself, is a wild ride through traditional Japanese melodies paired with modern sound, weird moments and accordion. Exactly my thing.
Jens Lekman «On a Pier, On the Hudson (feat. Matilda Sargren)» – I probably don't need to introduce the Swedish singer Jens Lekman here anymore, after all, he was one of the successful Swedish music exports in the late 2000s and early 2010s, who impressed with their upbeat folk music at the time. Now it's back, stylistically very retro and electronic.
