Rian Johnson prepares the launch of the third installment of its universe Knives Outthe titled Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
The “whodunnit” features the return of Daniel Craig in which it is described as “Benoit Blanc's most dangerous case so far.”
With its world premiere held at the last Toronto Film Festival, Netflix will give it two weeks of release in select theaters in the United States, starting November 26, while its release on the platform is scheduled for December 12 worldwide.
And while we await the release of Wake Up Dead ManJohnson tells IndieWire who is the actor or actress he most wants to join a future installment of Knives Out.
The answer should not be a surprise to anyone.
This is what Johnson tells the outlet:
“There are so many great actors that I would like to work with. But yes, Meryl Streep, if you are reading this, I think you would fit perfectly in a murder mystery movie.”
“You're Lorne [Michaels] could achieve it [que Streep apareciera en SNL]Wow, so are we.”
Johnson is not wrong. Streep already has experience in the “whodunnit” genre. The three-time Oscar winner is part of the murder mystery comedy, Only Murders in the Building of Huluplaying a role that leaves an exquisite taste in the mouth, like everything the legendary actress does. The role made her the winner of the Critics Choice for best supporting actress in a comedy series in 2024, and earned her an Emmy and Golden Globe nomination in the same year.
And is there any genre that I can't interpret? We all know the answer.
The so-called “whodunit cinema” had a kind of resurgence with the release of the first Knives Outwhich became the second highest-grossing original film of 2019, in addition to having earned the recognition of critics and the audience, and that of colleagues in the film industry, being recognized with an Oscar nomination for best original screenplay (Johnson).
After the great success of Knives Out, Netflix paid to Lionsgate for the distribution rights to the next two films under the moniker A Knives Out Mysteryfor the not inconsiderable amount of $450 million dollars. The sequel was released in December 2022 Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on the platform, with a limited release in theaters in the US, the same strategy that the streamer will repeat with the third film, serving to comply with the Oscar Academy's requirement – to have a screening in cinemas – for all those films seeking possible nominations.
The plot of Wake Up Dead Man addresses a murder in a church that Benoit Blanc (Craig) is trying to solve.
In more words and details, the story features an idealistic young priest named Jud Duplencity (played by Josh O’Connor of Challengers y The Crown), who is sent to help the charismatic and passionate Monsignor Jefferson Wicks (Josh Brolin of Sicario), but it soon becomes evident that all is not well in the church.
But even for Blanc, the enigma posed in this third installment seems “completely impossible”, as he himself states in the trailer: “This goes far beyond normal police work. It is something that not even I have experienced.”
In addition to Craig, O'Connor and Brolin, the star cast includes Cailee Spaeny (Alien: Romulus), Andrew Scott (Ripley), Kerry Washington (Scandal), Glenn Close (Tehran), Jeremy Renner (Mayor of Kingstown), Mila Kunis (Bad Moms), Daryl McCormack (Twisters), (Sicario) y Thomas Haden Church (Twisted Metal).
