ABC renewed veteran medical drama Grey’s Anatomy for a 23rd seasonleaving its entire Thursday lineup ready for next season after the renovations of 9-1-1el spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville, High Potentialy Abbott Elementary.

With the renewal, Grey’s extends its record as the longest-running medical drama in prime timea record he originally earned in 2019, as well as ABC's longest-running scripted series in primetime.

The number of episodes that will be responsible for has not yet been determined. Grey’s Anatomy for the next season. The renewal is expected to be accompanied by a budget cut, according to Deadline, and it is possible that the number of episodes could be less than the 18 that were produced in the last two seasons.

Season 23 will not feature the returns of Kevin McKidd (Owen Hunt), Kim Raver (Teddy), who will leave Grey’s after the end of season 22, which will be broadcast on Thursday, May 7.

Continuing with the cast, the production company 20th Television has until the end of June to renew the cast members for the next season.

The only two remaining original members remaining in the series in a regular role are Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey) and James Pickens Jr. (Richard Webber).

The return of both is expected for season 23, as well as that of other veterans such as Camilla Luddington (Jo Wilson), Caterina Scorsone (Amelia Shepperd), and Chris Carmack (Link). The five mentioned have one more year on their contract.

The above is not a guarantee, since Raver and McKidd were also a year older, but if we refer to the history, Grey’s has not dispensed with more than two high-profile members at a time in a single season.

Regarding the participation of Ellen Pompeoafter leaving her regular leading role in season 19, the actress continued as narrator, in addition to resuming her role as Meredith Gray on a recurring basis. Pompeo is one of the series' executive producers, alongside Rhimes, Betsy Beers, Krista Vernoff, Mark Gordon, Zoanne Clack, current showrunner Meg Marinis, and director and recurring cast member Debbie Allen.

The series created by Shonda Rhimes was an immediate hit upon its debut on ABC in 2005. In the decades since, it has withstood countless personnel changes, both in front of the screen and behind the scenes.

And although it is no longer a linear broadcast series with the enormous ratings of its first seasons, Grey’s remains one of the favorites in streaming format which gives good viewing numbers to Disney+. Last year it finished as the most watched series worldwide on Disney+ and Hulu, and as the second most watched in the United States on Hulu and Netflix.

Season 22 is currently airing on ABC, with the season finale planned to debut on May 7.
