With a theatrical release set for May, New Line Cinema y Warner Bros. share a new official trailer for the live-action sequel Mortal Kombat IIwhich announces the start of pre-sales for theaters in the United States.
The most recent installment of the live-action franchise Mortal Kombatwhich adapts the popular video game saga, follows the events of the first installment, the 2021 reboot, and promises to get closer to the story of the original game and introduce multiple new characters such as Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Noob Saibot (Joe Taslim) and fan favorite Johnny Cage (Karl Urban), as we could already see in the first trailer released last February, and in the new trailer.
Take a look at the end of the note.
With a fantastic setting, the sequel focuses on a deadly tournament between dimensions, where heroes from Earthrealm and the dark Outworld must fight for their own existence. Like the games that inspired it, the film anticipates being filled with violence, with each fight likely ending in gruesome deaths, meaning any character, both new and old, could end up on the guillotine.
The Plot picks up after the events of the first filmwhere the god of thunder and protector of Earthrealm, Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), has gathered a group of warriors, including Special Forces agents Jax Briggs (Mehcad Brooks) and Sonya Blade (Jessica McNamee), the sociopathic mercenary Kano (Josh Lawson) and MMA fighter turned mystic Cole Young (Lewis Tan).
Joining the good guys is Johnny Cage (Urban), the otherworldly princess Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), as well as another fan favorite, Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada), whose phrase in the game, “Come here!”is once again part of this progress.
SYNOPSIS:
This time, the fan-favorite champions, now joined by Johnny Cage himself, face each other in the ultimate, all-out, bloody battle to defeat the dark reign of Shao Kahn that threatens the very existence of the Earth Kingdom and its defenders.
Simon McQuoid returns as director for the sequel, with a script by Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight).
James WanMichael Clear produce for Atomic Monster, with Todd Garner, McQuoid and E. Bennett Walsh producing for Broken Road Productions.
The 2021 film focused its plot on Earth's greatest champions called to fight the enemies of Outworld in a tournament for the fate of the planet.
The film was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max under the strategy launched at that time by Warner Bros. It accumulated $83.6 million in the global box office, and generated almost 4 million views on the streamer during its opening weekend, becoming the most viewed WB original film on the streamer at the time.
Mortal Kombat II hits theaters and IMAX on May 7, 2026.
