Matt Shakman goes to the planet of the apes.
20th Century Studios has launched a new delivery of Planet of the Apesand you already have the director for the project.
Shakman, known for directing the series WandaVisionand the reboot The Fantastic Four: First Stepshas been chosen by the studio to take charge of the next planet of the apeswith a script Josh Friedmanin charge of writing the previous delivery, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apesin addition to the two most recent installments of the franchise Avataraccording to Deadline reports.
The media explains that, This new movie will not be a direct continuation of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apesreleased in theaters in 2024. History will go in a new direction.
Shakman and Friedman work on the development of an original story.
So, will we have another reboot? After all, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apesdirected by Wes Ball, was designed to be the beginning of a new trilogy, so saying that the next film will not be a sequel does not make the intentions clear.
20th Century Studios boss Steve Asbell addressed the issue on social media with a vague and cryptic statement saying, “I guess it depends on how you define 'continuation.'”
THE FRANCHISE THE PLANET OF THE APES
Planet of the Apes It has been a franchise with a long history, its origins date back to 1968, with a first installment that became a resounding success, which gave rise to four direct sequels and a short-lived television series.
A possible relaunch was stalled for decades before Tim Burton relaunched the franchise with a big-budget remake in 2001. That film was heavily criticized, but it made a decent amount of money. Ten years later, a prequel arrived, Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011), with unexpected success. This became the first of a trilogy centered on the talking ape character Caesarperformed by Andy Serkis. Audiences followed Caesar in two sequels directed by Matt Reeves: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) y War for the Planet of the Apes (2017).
In 2024, the studio relaunched the franchise once again, with the aforementioned Kingdom of the Planet of the Apesdirected by Ball, with a plot set 300 years after the events of the 2017 installment, in the same universe of said trilogy, centered on a group of young apes who question the authoritarian government of the ape that has taken the place of Caesar (Serkis). Along their journey, the apes bond with a young human girl.
