Horror project 'Undertone' sets debut on HBO Max

After finishing its run in theaters, the independent horror film, Undertone of A24se prepares for its streaming debut.

Undertone comes to HBO Max on June 26joining the platform's summer menu. Through a press release, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed the release date in recent days. The film joins two other A24 titles that will hit the platform during the same month, Pillion (June 5), and How to Make a Killing (June 19).

The same month, the streamer will also launch the third season of House of the Dragon (June 21), and the miniseries Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness (June 26).

Undertonefrom the screenwriter and director Ian Tuasonpremiered in theaters on Friday, March 13, becoming a resounding success of independent horror cinema, ending its run in theaters accumulating $21.6 million at the global box office.

The film had a micro budget of $500,000 dollars. This means that made more than 43 times its production cost.

Without big stars and with a minimal budget, this incredible collection shows that to achieve great box office and critical successes, all you need is a good film proposal that draws the public to the theaters.

This achievement will come in handy for Tuason for his next film project. The filmmaker has signed on to be the director of the next installment of the horror franchise Paranormal Activity of Blumhouse. The studio is known for having a micro-budget, high-performing box office production model.

In Mexico, Cine CANÍBAL was in charge of its distribution in theaters in May, under the title Undertone: Cursed Frequency.

WHAT IS IT ABOUT UNDERTONE?

Nina Kiri she plays Evy, a skeptical co-host of a paranormal podcast she runs with her friend Justin (Adam DiMarco), who firmly believes in the supernatural.

When Evy returns home to take care of her mother (Michèle Duquet), who is terminally ill, she and Justin receive disturbing recordings of a married couple (played by Keana Lyn Bastidas y Jeff Yung) who report strange noises in their home. As Evy investigates, she becomes increasingly consumed by fear and paranoia.

Cody Calahan and Dan Slater are producers, with Ian Tuason, Roy Lee, Douglas Lee, Al Akdari, Chad Archibald, and Melodie Austria among executive producers.

The Canadian production celebrated its world premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival in July 2025, where it received extremely positive reviews.
