Ahead of its arrival in theaters in October, Warner Bros. shared the final trailer of the tragicomedy Digger from the Mexican director Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant) and the protagonist Tom Cruise.
During a career spanning more than four decades, Cruise has played a versatile number of characters; He has been a secret agent on an impossible mission, a first-class fighter pilot, a vampire, a lawyer, a soldier fighting aliens, a rock star, a military advisor who embraces Samurai culture, among many others, and an action stuntman in his own right.
Cruise's next film role is perhaps the strangest and most outlandish character in the actor's filmography.
In the movie that WB promotes as “A comedy of catastrophic proportions”Cruise completely transforms into a character totally removed from his reality: his name is Digger Rockwell. A wealthy older oil tycoon, with southern manners and a prominent paunch, whose business ends up triggering a global ecological disaster. He undertakes a mission to remedy his mistake and try to save the world.
He is accompanied by a top-notch cast, which includes John Goodman (10 Cloverfield Lane) as president of the United States, to Sandra Hueller (Project Hail Mary, Anatomy of a Fall), a Rice Ahmed (Sound of Metal) as a scientist and right-hand man of the president, Michael Stuhlbarg (Your Honor, Call Me By Your Name), Jesse Plemons (Bugonia) y Sophie Wilde (Talk to Me).

SYNOPSIS:
“The tragicomedy follows the most powerful man in the world who causes a disaster and embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is the savior of humanity before the disaster he has unleashed destroys everything.”
Iñárritu directs the script who co-wrote the script with Sabrina Berman (El Traspatio, Between Pancho Villa and a naked woman), Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman, The Revenant), y Nicolás Giacobone (Birdman, The Revenant).
This is, by the way, the first time that Cruise is placed under the command of four-time Oscar winner, Iñárritu.
Digger was shot in VistaVision with a camera designed in 1954and for the production, González Iñárritu once again collaborated with Emmanuel Lubezkiare director of photography Oscar winner for The Revenant.
The film is produced by Iñárritu and Cruise, with backing from Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment.
The project is Iñárritu's first English-speaking project since The Revenant (2015). In January 2025, Cruise signed an agreement with WB to develop and produce feature films for cinema, this being the first project under said contract.
Digger opens in theaters and in IMAX on October 2, 2026.
