El slasher River continues to prepare the audience for its theatrical release by releasing a first official poster.

The marketing campaign is carried out by Blumhouse y Universal Pictures. The curious history of the project produced by Independent Film Company y Shudder Films, is that after celebrating its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival (TIFF) last September, the producer Jason Blum –who was present at the audience– left the movie theater and the next day it was reported that his studio, Blumhouse, had acquired the distribution rights to River; will bring it to theaters via Universal Pictures.

The film, which marks the feature debut of the writer and director Joshua Giulianobrings together on screen two favorite Scream Queens of the modern horror audience: Jane Levy (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) y Jessica Rothe (saga Happy Death Day).

In addition to Levy and Rothe, the cast includes DiLiegro data (Prey) y Max Mattern (Devil in Disguise: John Wayne Gacy).

The plot of the call “beautiful and brutal” slasherfollows three estranged brothers who reunite in their hometown after the death of their father. They prepare to spread his ashes in their favorite place, located on a remote river, but when their boat breaks down, the trip becomes a nightmare come true.

Stranded miles from any help and without cell reception, they soon realize they are being stalked by a faceless killer who emerges from the woods. To survive the night, the brothers must leave their old grudges behind and fight together against an implacable and almost mythical terror.

Take a look at the official poster at the end of the note.

In recent days it was revealed that the Motion Picture Association (MPA), the body in charge of granting the official classification to all Hollywood studio projects, gave River the Rated R by:

“Intense and bloody violence, some macabre images and foul language.”

Previously, Giuliano advanced about the project:

“I wanted to make the kind of slasher movie that I myself wanted to see. Something stripped down to its essential elements. To me, slasher movies are, at their core, simple and primal. They're about a group of human characters pursued by a killer. They're about the relentlessness of death, the pursuit of death, and sometimes the inevitability of death.”

The film was announced in November 2025, during its post-production.

The producers are Nick Antosca, Alex Hedlund y Steven Schneiderwhile executive producers include Jason Blum, Roy Lee, Matt Bordlie, Jonathan Kier, Ben Ross, Jeffrey Tinnell y Robert Tinnell.

In theaters, January 15, 2027.

ABOUT INDEPENDENT FILM COMPANY AND SHUDDER

In case you are not aware, we tell you that Independent Film Company, is the rebranding of the formerly known as IFC Films. In May 2025, the independent film producer and distributor announced its rebranding, with which it would be renamed Independent Film Company (IFC), releasing its logo, and, at the same time, changing the name of its parent group, from AMC Networks Entertainment Group to IFC Entertainment Group.

Thus, the integrated structure of AMC Networks' four film verticals, which include Independent Film Company, IFC Center, RLJE, and Shudder, was formalized. The brands continue to operate with a synergistic approach across the AMC Networks ecosystem.

IFC co-distributes horror films with Shudder, the streaming service specialized in that genre; IFC is in charge of distribution in theaters, while Shudder later makes them available to the audience on the platform.

The studio has distributed films such as The Babadook, Late Night with the Devil, Memoir of a Snail, In a Violent Nature, Boyhood, Oddity, Skinamarink, Watcher, When evil lurks, and many others.

In the case of RiverAs we mentioned above, distribution will be handled by Blumhouse via Universal Pictures.
