The world of the acclaimed and successful rom-com Crazy Rich Asians will continue on the small screen.
HBO has given the green light to a one-hour drama series based on the film that will serve as a continuation of said story. The protagonists of the film, Constance Wu, Henry Golding y Emmy Ronny Chiengwill return in leading roles for the series, which will also feature Oscar winner, Michelle Yeohin a recurring role, according to Deadline reports.
Development of the series began about two years ago. It is based on the best-selling books by Kevin Kwan.
Adele Limco-writer of the film, John M. Chuits director, and the producers Nina Jacobson y Brad Simpsonare creatively involved with the series.
The project, originally conceived for HBO Max – a platform that commissioned a development room in early 2025 – has now moved to HBO itself; This is a platform change that other high-profile series based on Warner Bros. intellectual properties have already experienced, such as Harry Potter, Dune: Prophecy, IT: Welcome To Derry, The Penguin y Lanterns.
Casey Bloys, co-president and chief content officer of Skydance Direct-To-Consumer, stated in a statement to the media:
“We are delighted that Adele and the team behind that landmark film are bringing the next chapter of this story to life. Constance, Henry, Ronny and Michelle are world-class stars, and we know that passionate fans of the film and the novels – true best-sellers – are eager to see more. We are pleased to collaborate with this talented production team and this cast.”
The series is produced by Lim, Chu, Kwan, Jacobson and Simpson; as well as Chloe Dan, Jeannine Tang, Naia Cucukov Richards and Rose Lam. The series is a co-production of HBO and Warner Bros. Television.
The change of genre to drama, instead of romantic comedy like the film, was decided from the development phase of the series, in 2025.
The film's plot follows Rachel (Wu), a New York-born American of Chinese origin, and her fiancé Nick (Golding), as they travel to Singapore – his homeland – to meet his family and friends. Several surprises await Rachel before she reaches the altar, including the fact that Nick's family is filthy rich.
Crazy Rich Asians It debuted at number one at the national box office in August 2018, with $35 million. With this, it became, in that instance, the highest-grossing release of a rom-com. Its run in theaters led it to collect $239 million dollars at the global box office.
About the series, Lim said:
“It's a family reunion in the style of Crazy Rich Asians! This series is the continuation we've been waiting for, but instead of just one movie, we get eight episodes to delve deeper into the characters and worlds of Kevin Kwan's brilliant books. Working with the original creative team, with the support and vision of HBO and Warner Bros. Television, has been a dream. Our team of writers is working at full capacity and we are looking forward to sharing what we have created.”
Channing Dungey, president of Warner Bros. Television Group and US Networks added:
“From a best-selling novel to a blockbuster movie and now television, Crazy Rich Asians has cemented its place as one of the most beloved stories in popular culture. Kevin Kwan created an irresistible world that perfectly combines glamour, humor and emotion, and the talented Adele Lim returns to adapt this famous story for a new television audience. We are equally excited to welcome back Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Ronny Chieng and Michelle Yeoh to reprise their iconic roles. “We look forward to making this series a reality with our partners at HBO.”
