Gleeks, are you ready? Glee is back.
Disney+ and Hulu have officially given the green light to a reboot of the popular and beloved musical tragicomedy Glee of Ryan Murphyaccompanying the announcement with the first official poster, available at the end of the note.
The series, released on Fox in 2009, followed the members of a school choir in Lima, Ohio, as they faced the ups and downs of high school and coming of age in college. After six seasons and 121 episodes on the air, Glee concluded in 2015. The series became an absolute major cultural phenomenon, remembered especially for the direct – and sometimes controversial – way in which it addressed topics such as sexuality, race, disability, mental health and others, as well as for its covers of songs such as “Don't Stop Believin”, “Teenage Dream”, “Somebody to Love”, “River Deep, Mountain High”, “Rumor Has It/Someone Like You”, and the number of guest stars such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Neil Patrick Harris and Ricky Martin, among others.
The series remains popular today, as does its music, which has an average of 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify.
The original cast included Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Darren Criss, Amber Riley, Naya Rivera, Heather Morris, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, Harry Shum Jr., Chord Overstreet, Mark Salling, Jayma Mays, Iqbal Theba and more.
WHAT IS KNOWN ABOUT THE REBOOT OF GLEE?
Details about the newly announced reboot are scarce; Disney has simply revealed that The series is being produced by 20th Television and will air on Hulu and Disney+.
Casting Info: This morning it was confirmed that Lea Michele will be back reprising her role as Rachel Berry. “She joins in,” a source told Variety. “It's still early, but things are looking good and we are happy to get the group back together.”
In recent weeks, Michele told E! News that she would love to be involved in a reboot: “I love 'Glee'. I will always love 'Glee'. I love Ryan Murphy. He has a very special place in my heart… I will follow Ryan wherever he goes.”
Michele led the cast as Rachel Berry, a precocious, arrogant and extraordinarily talented young woman and member of the McKinley School singing club. Throughout the series, Rachel's ambition often distanced her from her peers; Although he stopped at nothing to pursue his dreams on Broadway and beyond, on a personal level he dealt with the difficulties caused by his own reputation and interpersonal relationships.
Murphy recently told ET that he has: “Been in contact with about 10 of the original cast members,” so it is assumed that several of the aforementioned protagonists could be back with Michele.
The script for the reboot was written by Murphy along with his frequent collaborators, Brad Falchuk e Ian Brennan.
“It's very endearing; everyone had a lot of questions, but they were very enthusiastic about the idea,” Murphy announced.
For his part, Colfer, who played Kurt on the series, noted that returning to Glee would be difficult after Rivera's death, although he admitted that he would be willing to consider it, telling Bustle: “It was a really difficult show to do, and it would be even more difficult to do it now that Naya [Rivera] is no longer there. But I know the 'Glee' fans would probably come looking for me with pitchforks and 'jazz hand' gestures if I said no. So I don't know; I hope to have more information soon so I can reflect on it.”
Rivera died in 2020, at age 33, after tragically drowning in Lake Piru in California, while trying to save his young son, who had fallen into the water. His death was the third among the cast: Monteith died of an overdose in 2013, when the series was still broadcast, and Salling committed suicide in 2018, after pleading guilty to possession of child pornography.
In the series finale, aired on March 20, 2015, Rachel wins a Tony Award, marries Jesse St. James (played by Jonathan GroffMichele's best friend in real life) and becomes a surrogate mother for Kurt Hummel (Colfer) and Blaine Anderson (Criss).
After the conclusion of GleeMichele ventured into the Fox series, Scream Queensalso by Murphy. In 2022, his career took a second wind when he joined the cast of the revival of Funny Girl on Broadway, playing Fanny Brice, echoing the dreams that her character as Rachel Berry on Glee always had.
And that's what you missed in… Glee.
