Ingredients
1 stale baguette or French bread (from the day before is best)
2 cups of milk
3/4 cup of sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla essence
2 tablespoons port wine (optional)
4 eggs
Vegetable oil for frying
Powdered sugar and cinnamon for sprinkling
Directions
- Cut the bread into slices about 2 cm thick.Â
If you prefer, remove the skins from the slices. - In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and port wine (if using).Â
Stir well to dissolve the sugar. - Dip each slice of bread into the milk mixture, letting them soak for about 30 seconds on each side.Â
Make sure each slice is completely covered in the mixture. - In another bowl, beat the eggs.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add enough vegetable oil to fry the french toast.
- Dip each slice soaked in milk into the beaten eggs, covering both sides.
- Place the slices of bread in the heated skillet and fry for a few minutes on each side, until golden and crispy.Â
Be sure to turn them gently so they don’t break. - Remove the french toasts from the skillet and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil.
- In a shallow dish, combine powdered sugar and cinnamon to taste.
- Dip the fried french toast in the cinnamon-sugar mixture, covering both sides.
- Serve the french toast hot or at room temperature.Â
They are delicious both on their own and with honey, chocolate sauce or jam.
