Amazon MGM Studios has the action thriller in the works The Accountant 2which has already ensured the returns of Ben Affleck, Jon Bernthal, J.K. Simmons y Cynthia Addai-Robinson, reprising the roles from the first installment. Also back for the sequel will be the director Gavin O’Connorand the screenwriter Bill DubuqueDeadline reported.
The studio is collaborating with Matt Damon's production company Artists Equity to make the project possible, marking their fourth collaboration after co-making the documentary The Greatest Love Story Never Toldthe drama Airand the next one to be released Unstoppable. Artists Equity acquired the rights to the sequel from Warner Bros.
The first film, The Accountant (2016), titled Counter in our market, centers on Affleck playing Christian Wolff, a highly qualified CPA with autism who leads a double life as a forensic accountant for criminal organizations. When Christian discovers discrepancies at a legitimate robotics company, he must navigate a dangerous web of deception while staying one step ahead of both the law and his criminal clients.
Bernthal played Brax, Christian's security firm operator brother, and Simmons played Ray King, the director of the Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Addai-Robinson took on the role of Marybeth Medina, a promising Treasury agent tasked with uncovering the Accountant's true identity.
The film accumulated $155 million dollars in the global box office upon its release in theaters in 2016. In 2017 it became the most rented film on digital media.
As for the plot of the sequel, it is set in motion when Medina's former boss is murdered by unknown persons and she is forced to contact Christian to solve the murder. With the help of his estranged but deadly brother Brax, Chris applies his brilliant mind and his illegitimate methods to piece together the unsolved puzzle. As they get closer to the truth, the trio attracts the attention of some of the world's most ruthless killers, all determined to end their search.
The counter 2 is produced by Affleck and Damon for Artists Equity, alongside Lynette Howell Taylor of 51 Entertainment, and Mark Williams. Executive producers include Dani Bernfeld, Kevin Halloran, Michael Joe, and Alison Winter.
