Warner Bros. gave the green light to the development of a new installment of the science fiction saga The Matrixwith the signing of Drew Goddard as director and screenwritery Lana Wachowskithe co-writer and co-director of the original saga, on board as executive producer.
The news was announced by Deadline. The media reveals that the project is still in premature stages to know if the original members will return, Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne-Moss, Laurence Fishburne, Hugo Weaving y Jada Pinkett Smith.
Goddard made his directorial debut with the acclaimed horror hit, Cabin in the Woods (2011). He later directed Bad Times at the El Royale (2018), and some episodes of the series The Good Place. He has written the scripts for the applauded Cloverfield, Cabin in the Woods, World War Zy The Martian, for which he was nominated for an Oscar for best adapted screenplay. He has also written series such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the spinoff Angel, Alias, Lost, The Defendersy Daredevil.
Goddard will produce the new Matrix alongside Sarah Esberg (Moonlight, If Beale Street Could Talk) with their company, Goddard Textiles.
Regarding the signing of Goddard, Jesse Ehrman, president of production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, told the media:
“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the world of The Matrix, honoring what Lana and Lilly started over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the saga and characters. The entire Warner Bros. Discovery team is excited that Drew is making this new Matrix movie, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis spent a quarter-century building here at the studio..”
Goddard joins in saying:
“It is not an exaggeration to say that the Matrix films changed both cinema and my life. “Lana and Lilly’s exquisite art inspires me daily and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to tell stories in their world.”
The original 1999 film follows a computer hacker, defeated by a monotonous job, who is lured by a beautiful stranger to a cybernetic underworld where a major war is being waged with the real world. The film revolutionized cinematic visual effects with unforgettable action sequences.
The franchise currently consists of four films, The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions y The Matrix Resurrections. Together they have raised $1.8 billion worldwide. The franchise has won four Oscars.
