Universal Pictures shared to the audience a new official trailer from the mythological action epic The Odisseyfrom the screenwriter and director Christopher Nolan.

The Odyssey adapts Homer's epic poem, with Matt Damon taking the lead as Odysseus.

Based on the ancient epic poem by Homer, The story revolves around Odysseus, king of Ithaca, on his perilous journey home after the Trojan Warexploring themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning, and fighting against divine will.

During his journey, the protagonist faces the cyclops Polyphemus, the mermaids, the nymph Calypso and the witch goddess Circe in the treacherous oceans that separate him from his native island and his wife Penelope, who breaks up a wedding procession that she weaves every night in case one of the suitors who have taken over her home ends up marrying her if her husband does not return. His memory is also guarded by his son Telemachus. The story also includes gods such as Athena, Poseidon, and Zeus.

Much of the above is part of what we can see in the latest preview, presented by Nolan during his visit to the Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert on Monday night. Trailer Debuts First Looks at a Chilling Cyclops Polyphemus, already the winner of the Oscar, Charlize Theron (Apex), interpreting of Calypsothe mythical nymph who holds Odysseus (Damon) on her island, Ogygia, and who we see telling him that he is “a man who needs to control his destiny, but you cannot control this.”

By the way, the terrifying Cyclops was created with practical effects instead of CGI, while the scene – key to the film – that confronts him with Odysseus was filmed in a real cave in Greece.

The star cast also includes Tom Holland like Telemachus, Anne Hathaway like Penelope, Robert Pattinson (The Drama) like Antinous, Lupita Nyong'o (A Quiet Place: Day One), Zendaya (The Drama) like Athena.

The trailer shows Odysseus' son Telemachus (Holland) hell-bent on finding his father, much to the chagrin of Antinous (Pattinson), an imposing figure who not only attempts to woo Telemachus' mother Penelope (Hathaway), but also berates Telemachus for “longing for a father you didn't even know, like a sniveling bastard” in Odysseus' absence.

The trailer ends with Odysseus (Damon), saying that “no one can come between me and my home,” as footage of the Cyclops chasing his men is shown, before his ship reaches the towering whirlpool of Charybdis in the final moments of the trailer.

Take a look at the end of the note.

Nolan told Colbert that the film is written “non-linearly”which “It begins 10 years after the Trojan War, and? “things are not going well in his kingdom” in the absence of Odysseus.

Other members of the great cast are Mia Goth like Melanto, Himesh Patel (Tenet) like Eurylochus, Jon Bernthal (The Bear), John Leguizamo (The Green Veil), Benny Safdie (Oppenheimer), Elliot Page (Inception), Bill Irwin (The Dropout), Samantha Morton (The Serpent Queen), Jesse Garcia (Flamin’ Hot), Will Yun Lee (The Good Doctor), Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus, Upgrade), y Corey Hawkins (The Piano Lesson).

For Damon and Hathaway it is a new collaboration with Nolan. Both were part of Interstellarwith Hathaway also participating in The Dark Knight Rises. This is one of five film projects Hathaway is releasing this year. It's also a new collaboration with Patel, who was part of the cast of Tenet.

Filming took place in Morocco and Sicily, specifically on Favignana Island, a place where according to scholars, it served for Odysseus's wanderings in Homer's epic. It is believed to be the place where Homer imagined that Odysseus would disembark with his various tribulations to roast goats and stock up on food. The island, also known as “the island of the goats” is part of the Egadi Islands archipelago, off the northwest coast of Sicily.

The production used new technology IMAX and equipment never used before, and it has already made history by becoming the first narrative feature film filmed entirely with IMAX cameras. What does it mean? While filming was previously limited to filming action scenes in IMAX mainly, due to how noisy the format's cameras are for filming dialogues close to the actor, Nolan and company created a new casing for the IMAX moviecall blimpto significantly reduce noise.

The feature film is produced by Nolan along with his associate and wife, Emma Thomasfor their production company, Syncopy. Thomas Hayslip is executive producer.

The film reaches cinemas on July 16, 2026 worldwide. It will include IMAX theaters.
