In 1990, the English label Imaginary Records released into the world what many consider – not without reason – the best of the many tributes to Velvets already released, called Heaven and hell: A tribute to The Velvet Underground.
Divided into three discs, the compilation brings a true B-side constellation rereading 30 songs by Lou and co., from Chapterhouse, who opens the package with “Lady Godiva's operation”, to Badgeman, who closes the chart with his vision of the insane “Sister ray.”
The albums became objects of desire from then on, but one of them specifically has always been my favorite, and it is the one that plays today on our virtual record player: the first volume of the series, which includes none other than the aforementioned Chapterhouse, Telescopes , Nirvana, Wedding Present, Buffalo Tom, James, Screaming Trees, Motorcycle Boy, Terry Bickers (from House of Love and later Levitation, here accompanied by Bradleigh Smith) and Ride. Holy shit, right?
In 1994, the same Imaginary released a summary of Heaven and hell, Fifteen minuteswith 14 of the 30 songs, and in 2009 Ozit-Morpheus Records re-released the compilation with the title Unpiecing the jigsaw: A tribute to The Velvet Undergroundadding Nico’s live versions of “All tomorrow parties” and “Femme fatale”. But as said in the paragraph above, the tour is now at the beginning of this road.
Turn up the volume, listen to the stem. And hold on to the trip!
