This past Sunday afternoon, HBO y HBO Max issued “Winter Fire”the long-awaited final episode of the first season of IT: Welcome to Derry.
Welcome to Derry it is a prequel series to the two films ITwith the return of its director Andy Muschietti in multiple roles as executive producer, screenwriter, director of some episodes, and even a couple of cameos in front of the camera, and the return of Bill Skarsgård like a terrifying Pennywise.
The series takes us back to the place where THAT beganlocating its plot in 1962in the period preceding the events of IT: Chapter One (2017).
IT: Welcome to Derryby its title in our region, addresses the origin story of Pennywise the Clownas well as the dawn of the 27 year curse that stalks the small town of Maine.
The inspiration is the interludes written by Mike Hanlon in the novel by Stephen Kingwhich document “catastrophic events” from the past of Derry, Maine. The first of these events, “The Black Spot” is portrayed in the first season.
At the end of the last episode of the season, an image on the screen showing the title IT: Welcome to Derry Chapter Oneconfirmed Muschietti's plans for the series: the first season is just the beginning.
The director, and his sister and executive producer Bárbara Muschiettirevealed to CinePOP that the series will indeed have three seasons, saying:
“For now, we are going to finish this story, or our intention is to finish this story in three seasons of IT: Welcome to Derry”.
Take a look at the video interview at the end of the note.
The most recent statements by the Muschiettis echo those made almost a year agoin which Andy announced that the three planned seasons would take place in three different times: 1962, 1935 y 1908respectively in that order. Here we remember his words:
“It is a story that is based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon's research. They are fragments of his research. For 27 years, he's the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it and all that.
And continues:
“Every time [Pennywise] comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event What happens at the beginning of that cycle? [el incendio en Black Spot, la masacre de la Banda Bradley, una banda de ladrones de bancos de los años 30, y la explosión de Kitchener Ironworks]. We are basing the three seasons of this series in each of these catastrophic events. There is a reason the story is told backwards. The first season is 1962, second season is 1935 and third season is 1908.”
In that instance, the filmmaker commented that WB was happy with the result of the first season and that they were “very interested in making a second season as soon as possible.”
At the moment HBO has not made the renewal official. Welcome to Derryalthough it seems to be only a matter of time, if we base ourselves on the success of the audience and critics, both specialized and fans.
