Apple has achieved the exclusive broadcast rights of the Formula 1 in the United States.
The five-year deal goes into effect next year, with broadcasting carried out by its streaming service, Apple TVy replacing ESPN as the broadcaster of all F1 events (via official site).
The parties did not disclose the financial details of the agreement, however, CNBS reported that it was for $140 million dollars annuallya figure higher than the $90 million that ESPN, owned by Walt Disney, pays each season for F1, which has been the broadcaster since 2018.
The partnership between the technology giant and F1 spreads after the box office success of F1: The Movieproduced by Apple and distributed by Warner Bros., which grossed more than $620 million worldwide in the summer. The film directed by Joseph Kosinski and starring Brad Pitt, will arrive on Apple TV on December 12.
Acquiring the broadcast rights to one of the fastest growing sports in the US, Apple ensures a boost for Apple TV. The streamer took home 22 Emmy Awards in the 2025 edition, but it still does not represent much competition with other leaders in the field such as Netflix or HBO Max.
F1 joins Apple's growing sports offering, which includes the Major League Soccer and the Friday Night Baseball. Live sports have become a key battleground in the streaming industryas platforms compete for expensive rights that attract loyal fans, reduce subscriber churn and increase advertising revenue.
In recent years, the NFL, NBA, MLB, Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, among others, have expanded beyond traditional television – linear transmission – and into streaming in many regions of the world. The domino effect benefits streamerssince sports fans must pay a subscription to different platforms to continue accessing their usual content.
Eddy Cue, Senior VP of Services at Apple stated:
“We are delighted to expand our relationship with Formula 1 and offer Apple TV subscribers in the US privileged access to one of the most exciting and fastest-growing sports on the planet.”
As part of the agreementApple TV will broadcast all training, qualifying, sprint sessions and grand prix. some races y all training sessions of the season will also be available for free in the Apple TV app.
