The third installment of the franchise Tron by Disney, has been in development for some time, becoming definitive in recent times.

With filming just starting this week, the most recent news shared by Deadline confirms that Tron 3officially titled Tron: Areshas signed the two-time Emmy and Golden Globe winner, Gillian Anderson. No details about his character have been released.

Anderson joins a cast that includes Evan Peters (Dahmer, Mare of Easttown), Jared Leto (Morbius), Greta Lee (Past Lives, The Morning Show), Jodie Turner-Smith (Queen & Slim, Murder Mystery 2), Cameron Monaghan (), y Sarah Desjardins ().

The original movie, Tron, was released by Disney in 1982, with Jeff Bridges in the lead role playing video game designer Kevin Flynn, who is transported into his own virtual creation to team up with Tron, a security program played by Bruce Boxleitner. The sequel Tron: Legacy premiered in 2010 with the return of Bridges, and Garrett Hedlund and Olivia Wilde. Hedlund played Bridges' son going out in search of him and entering the same virtual world.

The story of Tron: Ares is said to, “Focus on the rise of an intelligent program that intersects with the human world that is not ready for contact.

“Leto is Ares, the show’s manifestation, with Lee playing a video game programmer and CEO of a tech company who has to go on the run to protect her world-changing technology.”

The cyber adventure is directed by Joachim Ronning (Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales), with a script Jesse Wigutow y Jack Thorne.

Justin Springer, Jeffrey Silver, Emma Ludbrook and Leto are producers. Russell Allen is the executive producer.

Anderson is recognized for her roles in the iconic science fiction series The X-Filesand more recently, for his performances in the series The Crown y Sex Education. The actress has just finished filming the feature film Scoop, based on the explosive 2019 BBC Newsnight interview with Prince Andrew about his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Anderson plays former BBC journalist Emily Maitlis in the film. Anderson also stars alongside Jason Isaacs in the upcoming film adaptation of Raynor Winn's best-selling memoir, The Salt Path.
