It is coming Backrooms 2.

After a marvelous $118 million global debut, including $81 million at the domestic box office, which set a box office record for A24, Backrooms of Kane Parsons begins to prepare to take the audience back into the terrifying dimension beyond reality.

According to a Deadline report, Parsons is currently looking for a collaborator with whom to write the script for the sequel.. The final decision, it is explained, rests with A24. For now, the studio has not given the official green light for a sequel.

During the press tour of Backroomsthe YouTuber turned filmmaker, made clear his desire to expand the universe of Backrooms in a film anthology. In an interview with Variety, the director explained about the future:

“Right now I have an interesting project that I want to take advantage of with the energy and optimism that surrounds this film. Without a doubt, 'Backrooms' was always conceived as a series that transcends the limits of this film. In fact, I would say that This is just a gateway that will allow us to move towards the true essence of the narrative, which has been brewing on the internet for years. But it is an accessible version that serves as a starting point. For those who are interested, I'm under contract and on top of everything, which means I'm definitely not done with 'Backrooms'. I have very specific projects underway that I'm looking forward to talking about, but for now, they remain a mystery.”

Backrooms adapts the creepypasta that originated in 2019, with an image posted by an anonymous user on 4chanbased on the idea of accidentally and gradually disappearing from reality, into a network of seemingly empty rooms, only to discover that you are not alone. In 2022, the concept had new life when the premise was turned into a short film in found footage, by a then 16-year-old Parsons, on his YouTube channel, Kane Pixels.

Parsons expanded the mythology of his short film with several videos published on the social network, accumulating millions of views, consolidating itself as a internet viral horror phenomenon.

Parsons made his feature film directorial debut with the project, also becoming the youngest director of an A24 production. Parsons is one of the members of a new generation of filmmakers emerging from YouTube.

The production companies are A24, Atomic Monster of James Wan, 21 Laps Entertainment of Shawn Levyy Chernin Entertainment. A24 and Chernin Entertainment were co-financiers.

James Wan, Michael Clear, and Shawn Levy are producing alongside Robert Patino, Dan Cohen, Dan Levine, and Chris Ferguson. Executive producers are Judson Scott, Alayna Glasthal, and Chris White.

Some of the records left by the premiere of Backrooms in cinemas:

  • He achieved the best opening weekend ever for A24surpassing – and tripling – the record previously established by Civil War (2024) by Alex Garland for $25.5 million.
  • He positioned himself as the best debut ever for an original horror film.
  • It is the best opening for a director's debut film that is not part of a franchise.
  • Parsons is the youngest director to have a film at number 1 at the box officebreaking the record previously set by Josh Trankwho was 27 years old when Chronicle (2012) premiered in first place at the national box office, with $22 million dollars.

With a production budget of $10 million dollars, it is already one of the most profitable films of the year.
