'Connie', the sequel to 'The Godfather' is officially underway

The one cataloged as one of the best franchises in the history of cinema, The Godfatherlaunches a new sequel, 54 years after the release of the first installment.

The 1972 classic, based on the 1969 novel of the same name by Mario Puzo, was the beginning of one of the most influential trilogies in history, and often acclaimed for its masterful narrative, great performances, wonderful soundtrack, and impressive cinematography. The film portrays the rise, fall, and legacy of the Italian-American mafia dynasty, the Corleone family, headed by patriarch Marlon Brandoand later by Al Pacino.

For the new sequel, the plot will focus again on the Corleone family, on one member of the clan in particular: Connie Corleone, Don Vito's only daughterperformed by Talia Shire in the original trilogy co-written, produced and directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

Connieby its official title, will adapt the upcoming novel of the same name, written by the bestselling author Adriana Trigianiin collaboration with the heirs of Mario Puzo.

The film rights to the novel were acquired by Paramount Picturesand will develop the adaptation that will coincide with the book's release, scheduled for fall 2027 (via Word of Reel).

Regarding Coppola's possible return, a representative for the filmmaker has confirmed to THR that it is “unlikely” that he will write or direct the adaptation of Conniemaking it clear that there are offers that can be rejected.

Author Trigiani announced her book earlier this month, describing it as “a sequel to The Godfather, which will be told from the perspective of Connie Corleone and the women” of the film saga, in addition to offering the public a new vision of the enormous power and influence that Connie exercised over the family's criminal empire, stating, according to AP:

“Connie is a novel about how a woman fights to make her way in a world that has already decided who she is, what she represents, and how she should be treated. Those who underestimated Don Vito Corleone and Michael Corleone did so at their own risk. The same will happen with Connie Corleone”.

In the original trilogy, Connie undergoes a profound transformation, going from a sheltered and submissive young bride to a rebellious and grieving widow, and finally to a ruthless and calculating matriarch.
