'Don't Breathe 3' underway with the returns of Stephen Lang and Jane Levy

It's time to not breathe again.

The filmmaker Fede Álvarez announced that he had written a script for Don’t Breathe 3and that the third installment is officially underway, with the returns of Stephen Lang y Jane Levy.

The news was announced by Álvarez during the screening of the first installment, Don’t Breathe (2016) at Beyond Fest, on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the horror thriller's release. Present at the event held at the MUBI Theater in Santa Monica, CA. were Álvarez, co-writer Rodo Sayagues, Lang, Levy and Dylan Minnette (via Dread Central).

“There is a script for Don’t Breathe 3. “Jane will be back and Slang—Stephen Lang—will be back too,” Álvarez told the audience, pointing to the two actors who were on stage, as seen in videos of the Q&A session published on social networks. The announcement provoked exclamations of surprise and applause among the fans present.

Released in 2016, the first installment starred Levy, Minnette and Daniel Zovatto, who played a group of thieves who ended up trapped in a house converted into a death trap, belonging to a blind veteran (Lang) of the Gulf War, ready to kill any intruder.

Levy played Rocky, a young woman desperate to leave a home marked by abuse, who sees the robbery of the blind man's home as an easy hit and a solution to her problems.

Don’t Breathe was a surprise late summer hit for Sony Pictures, grossing $89 million at the domestic box office and $157 million worldwide, against a budget of just $10 million. The sequel, Don’t Breathe 2 (2021), focused on the character of Lang and again featured the collaboration of Álvarez and his co-writer Rodo Sayagues, who took over the direction. This sequel grossed only $32 million domestically and $53 million worldwide, although it was released in August 2021, during the uncertain first months of theatrical release following COVID-19 lockdowns.

The story of Rocky and the Blind Man is not over yet. The first film concludes with Rocky fleeing Detroit with his younger sister, Diddy, and the stolen money. Later, a television report reveals the unexpected twist: the Blind Man has survived. However, he omits Rocky's identity and mention of money from his police statement. There was even an alternate ending in which he was seen following the sisters to the station, although the filmmakers ruled out that version for the theatrical release.
