That one prepares the audience for the long-awaited theatrical release of Godzilla Minus Zeroscheduled for November of this year.
The sequel features the return of Takashi Yamazaki as director, screenwriter and VFX supervisor. The filmmaker won the Oscar Award for Best Visual Effects for Godzilla Minus Onemarking the first time that a Godzilla film received both an Academy Award nomination and the first win.
The plot picks up in 1949, two years after the turbulent events of Godzilla Minus Onecontinuing the story of the Shikishima family as they face a new calamity. The new installment shows Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki) and his now wife, Noriko (Minami Hamabe), facing off against a returning Godzilla, this time with an even more menacing presence than before, in both Japan and New York City
Yamazaki has advanced some details about Godzilla Minus Zerospecifically, about having a larger budget and the possibility of filming in IMAXand how that will improve the experience for the audience.
In an interview with ScreenRant, the director explained:
“I think if you put too much emphasis on awards or fame, it can tarnish the movie and what it should bring to the story it's supposed to tell.
“When passing from Godzilla Minus One a Godzilla Minus ZeroI focused a lot on how to put aside all those feelings—and all that emotional baggage, so to speak—and remember what it took to create Godzilla Minus Oneas well as how to approach this film as if we were recreating Godzilla Minus One in many ways.”
“As for the budget, We have had a larger budget than the previous film, something we greatly appreciate. I tried allocate as much of those resources as possible to creating unprecedented visual expressions. In other words, I tried invest a large part of that additional budget both in the image and in the experience that the public lives when going to movie theaters. For example, there were several sequences within the same scene in which I tried to capture the intensity of a kaiju attack from the human perspective; Thanks to this, we achieved convey an added level of terrorespecially for those who see the film in the cinema. In short, The budget has translated into a large entertainment component.”
IT WILL BE A MORE IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCE
Being able to film in IMAX is something that will fully engage the audience, both visually and through sound. As told by Yamazaki:
“The IMAX version of the film adds a whole new dimension of immersion. The idea was making the kaiju look real and placing the audience at ground level, face to face with them. That was an important aspect to which I allocated additional budget; It really allowed us to expand our possibilities and the type of visual expression we could capture on screen.
“The same goes for sound. Thanks to that extra budget, we were able to greatly enhance both fidelity and sound intensity.. Certain fighter planes appear in the film; in fact, we were able to record their sound directly on location. By layering these recordings, additional acoustic depth is achieved that the audience will be able to perceive. And, just like with music, I've never seen so many instruments recorded for a soundtrack. There were many aspects of the production where we could allow ourselves to be more ambitious and extravagant than usual..”
OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
“The war reduced Japan to nothing, and Godzilla plunged it into ruin. Two years have passed since then, and the country has waged a titanic struggle to recover and finally resume its daily life. Just when humanity managed to cling to a hard-won peace, a new threat attacks, crushing hope in an instant. There is no third chance. It all ends here”.
In addition to the return of Kamiki, the cast includes the return of Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Andoy Miu Tanakaand the introduction of a new key character: Kanji Murakami (My Tanaka), a biologist with deep psychological scars from the war.
Godzilla Minus Zero premieres in theaters and in IMAX on November 6, 2026.
