Last night, it was the delivery of the 82nd edition of the Golden Globes.
One of the highlights of the Golden Globes 2025it was when Demi Moore was named the winner of the Golden Globe for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
Moore's recognition was for her characterization as Elisabeth Sparkle in one of the best horror films of 2024 (and outside the genre as well), The Substance of Coralie Fargeat.
Moore's performance has been praised by critics since the premiere of the titled The substance at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024, with audiences joining its theatrical release in September of the same year. Now, awards season catches up, recognizing his work with the Golden Globe.
This resulted in a huge win not only for horror films, which are often overlooked at awards ceremonies, but also a huge personal victory for Moore.
Although it may be hard to believe, as Moore herself mentioned during her acceptance speech, “I've been doing this for more than 45 years, and it's the first time I've won anything as an actress.”
Moore proceeded to tell an anecdote in which 30 years ago, a producer told her that her role as an actress in the industry would be limited to being a “palmera actress”that is, an actress that no one would take seriously, and that the recognition of the industry would be something she would never have.
The actress explained:
“I bought [lo que me dijo] and I believed it. That eroded me over time. To the point where a few years ago I thought maybe this was it, maybe I was complete, maybe I had done what I was supposed to do.
“And just when I was at a low point, this magical, bold, brave, off-kilter, absolutely crazy script called The Substance. Y the universe told me it wasn't over yetand I am very grateful to [la directora] Coralie [Fargeat] for trusting me to step forward and play this woman.
“A Margaret [Qualley]for being the other half of me, that I couldn't do without, for taking care of me. To the people who have been with me for over 30 years, especially the people who believed in me when I didn't believe in myself.”
Moore closes his emotional speech with a powerful reflection:
“And I leave you with one thing that I think this movie conveys. In those moments when we think we're not smart enough, not pretty enough, not thin enough, not successful enough, or basically just not good enough.
A woman told me, 'I know you will never be enough, but you can know how much you are worth if you just let go of the measuring stick.'
“So Today I celebrate this as a marker of my fulfillment and the love that drives me, and the gift of doing something I love and remembering that I belong.”
The video of his full speech is available below.
The body horror, The Substancewas nominated for five Golden Globes, including best direction, best screenplay and best motion picture, musical or comedy. Moore's co-star, Margaret Qualleywas nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category.
The Substance works as a satire of a business where youth and beauty are often the priority of those in charge of making the most important decisions. This gore-filled body horror follows a fading celebrity (Moore) who decides to use a black market serum, a substance that replicates cells and temporarily creates a younger, better version of herself (played by Qualley), but Failure to comply with strict conditions will cause unexpected and frightening side effects.
The film is available to stream on MUBI, in addition to being able to rent or buy it in Digital format on platforms such as Amazon, Apple, and others.
