It is a fact that any series that has survived 20 seasons on the air is going to go through changes in its staff, in front of and behind the cameras.
In the case of the veteran medical drama, Grey’s Anatomy created by Shonda Rhimes and broadcast by ABC, the welcomes and goodbyes have not been long in coming.
The most recent change in staff confirms the goodbye of two regular members. First, Jake Borelli, who has played Dr. Levi Schmitt for seven years. His departure is due to budget cuts, according to Deadline reports. The outlet also reports that Borelli is negotiating to return some episodes next season, 21, to give closure to his character.
Last April, Grey’s Anatomy was renewed for a historic 21st season, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama. The record was originally obtained in 2019.
Borelli debuted as Levi in the season 14 premiere, joining a new generation of interns at Gray Sloan Memorial. Levi had a romantic relationship with orthopedic surgeon Nico Kim (Alex Landi), but they broke up in season 18, and Nico later left the hospital to accept a job with the Seattle Mariners. Levi has now worked his way up to become head resident alongside his roommate Taryn Helm (Jaicy Elliot).
The other member to leave the series is Midori Francis, who has played intern Mika Yasuda in a regular role for the two most recent seasons. Like Borelli, Francis is in negotiations with the network to reprise her role in season 21 and conclude her story. Deadline reports that her decision to leave Grey’s It was on friendly terms.
Her debut as Mika Yasuda was made in the season 19 premiere, as part of a new group of five inmates accepted into Gray Sloan. In season 20, he has dedicated himself to helping Teddy Altman (Kim Raver) during his recovery from life-saving surgery. On a personal level, Yasuda has been in a relationship with Taryn Helm (Elliot), and shared a room with Benson Kwan (Harry Shum Jr.).
season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy will air the season finale on Thursday, May 30 on ABC.
