OFFICIAL SYNOPSIS:
“When a mysterious fog engulfs a futuristic metropolis, releasing a lethal and elusive entity, a tormented young woman searches for her father. Her search intersects with that of an American soldier who undertakes a harrowing odyssey to rescue his daughter from hell.”
The script was co-written by Refn and Esti Giordani (Life). Refn shot the feature film in Tokyo.
Refn is the producer, with executive producers including Lene Børglum, Christina Erritzøe, Takuma Takasaki, and Kimberly Willming. Donaggio Pine (Carrie, The Howling) composed the soundtrack.
Refn's inspiration for the project, according to his statements to Deadline, was unconventional:
“Three years ago, I almost died, and I was for 20 minutes. When they tell you that you might die in two weeks, a lot of things go through your mind: you are afraid, you get angry, you get frustrated, you get sad, you react with anger. But then, I realized that I had been given a gift, that if I could come back, I would have a second chance. Most people don't have that.
“When I came back to life, thank God, I thought: I have to start from scratch, but this time, with 30 years of experience. You have to start from scratch with everything; move your legs, your arms, things like that. And I saw that I wanted to make films again, in the same way that I wanted to make them when I was young, but I also had a very specific mantra: I will do what comes to mind instinctively.”
