The film has amassed $99.1 million at the domestic (US) box office, and $103.8 million internationally, for a global total of $202.9 million. The result is huge when we consider that the budget for the film was a mere $17 million.
Word of mouth has been a key element in the great commercial success of Smileand we can not forget about a great marketing campaign by Paramount, which included a strategy that went viral, in which some people smiled menacingly in public places, such as in the case of MLB, NFL, and television broadcasts.
Smile continues an excellent run at the box office for Paramount, which has scored big this 2022 with the releases of Scream, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, The Lost City, y Top Gun: Maverick.
In a statement to the media, Brian Robbins, president and CEO of Paramount Pictures comments (via Variety):
“The spectacular global performance of ‘Smile’ demonstrates what is truly possible when you deliver a brilliantly catchy marketing campaign on top of a masterfully crafted high-concept horror film! Thank you to all of our creative partners, director Parker Finn, incredible cast and to our best production, marketing and distribution teams for creating a community entertainment experience that movie-loving audiences can only find in theaters!”
With the arrival of success, it is inevitable to think that the studio could be looking forward to a new installment. Regarding a possible sequel, Finn admitted the following in a recent interview:
“As a filmmaker I never want to make a copy of something, so if there were more [entregas] of Smile, it would be somewhat surprising if the audience did not wait.”
The plot of the titled Smile in our country, focuses on Dr. Rose Cotter, a character played by Bacon sauce (Mare of Easttown, Narcos: México, 13 Reasons Why), whose patient dies in front of her after informing her of a horror she witnessed that made her smile. Rose begins to experience horrible events that she cannot explain.
“As overwhelming terror begins to take over her life, Rose must face her haunting past in order to survive and escape her horrifying new reality.”
