The legendary film director, Rob Reiner and his wife, the photographer and producer Michele Singer Reinerwere found dead on Sunday, December 14, 2025, at their home in Brentwood, California.

According to reports from the Los Angeles Police Department, the bodies of Rob and Michele were found stabbedthis being the cause of their deaths.

The family confirmed the deaths in a statement:

“It is with deep sadness that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss and ask for privacy during this incredibly difficult time.”

Although the LAPD initially stated in an emergency press conference on Sunday night that, “at this time, the Los Angeles Police Department is not looking for anyone as a suspect, person of interest in any other way, and we will not do so until we conclude our investigation,” early Monday morning, it was announced that Nick Reiner32-year-old son of Rob and Michele, was arrested and booked early Monday morning in connection with the death of his parents.

This is being carried out as a murder investigation. “We are developing a schedule,” a police source told Deadline.

According to Los Angeles Sheriff's Department records, Nick Reiner was booked at 5:04 a.m. PT this morning. Bail was set at $4 million..

UPDATE 3:27 pm PT: Police have changed the suspect's status to no bail. Additionally, the LAPD shared the following statement this Monday afternoon:

As a result of the initial investigation, it was determined that the Reiners were victims of homicide. The Reiners were found in their Brentwood home by their daughter and another person around 3:30 pm PT on Sunday. Both bodies were discovered with multiple stab wounds.

The investigation further revealed that Nick Reiner, 32-year-old son of Robert and Michele Reiner, was responsible for their deaths, and was located and arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. He was charged with murder and remains in custody without bail. On Tuesday, December 16, 2025, the case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for consideration.

Nick Reiner has openly spoken about his struggle with addiction. The 2015 film, Being Charlieco-written by Nick and directed by his father Rob, was loosely based on Nick's experience with addiction. According to sources, Nick had recently moved in with his parents.

At approximately 3:38 pm (PT) on Sunday, the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) received an urgent call about an “incident” at the Reiner home, located at 200 South Chadbourne Avenue. Authorities described the situation as a “family incident.” Sources told the outlet that authorities were summoned by one of the Reiners' children, presumably their daughter Romy Reiner, a neighborhood resident.

Billy Crystal y Larry David were seen at the scene, according to ABC Los Angeles.

ROB REINER AND A LEGACY WITH AN INDELABLE MARK ON CINEMA

Reiner was born on March 6, 1947 in the Bronx, New York, into an entertainment industry dynasty. Her parents were Carl Reiner, creator of The Dick Van Dyke Show, and Estelle Reiner, an actress and singer who notably appeared as the scene-stealing client in Reiner's classic, When Harry Met Sally… at Katz's Delicatessen, who jokes by saying the famous phrase: “I’ll have what she’s having”.

Reiner first rose to fame as an actor, with a breakout role in CBS's groundbreaking Norman Lear comedy, All in the Familywhich aired for nine seasons in the '70s.

The filmmaker met Michele Singer Reiner on the filming of the iconic rom-com starring Meg Ryan and Crystal, and they had three children: Romy, Nick and Jake. Reiner was previously married to director Penny Marshall, who died in 2018.

Outside of his career in front of and behind the camera, Reiner was always a political advocate and booster of the Democratic Party. His latest comments in October called the current Trump administration “moving beyond the McCarthy era” and urging Hollywood storytellers to “start reaching out to the rest of the country, letting them know what's going to happen to them.”
