Lady Gaga on her Harley Quinn in 'Joker 2': “She's very authentic”

Lady Gaga has spoken for the first time about his role in the sequel Joker: Folie à Deuxwhere she plays a new version of Harley Quinn.

During an interview with Access Hollywood on the red carpet at the premiere of her Gaga Chromatica Ball concert at MAX, Gaga said:

“You know my version of Harley is mine and it's very authentic for this movie and these characters. “I've never done anything like what I did in this movie before, so it's all going to be brand new and really fun.”

Gaga will take on the role of Harley Quinn, which Margot Robbie played in films like Suicide Squad (2016), Birds of Prey (2020) y The Suicide Squad (2021). Robbie has expressed his excitement for the new version of the character after learning that Gaga was cast in the role. In a video interview with MTV News in 2022 he stated:

“It makes me very happy because I said from the beginning, all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, in the same way that Macbeth or Batman always go from great actor to great actor. It's a great honor to have built a solid enough foundation that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors can have the opportunity to play. I think that [Lady Gaga] will do something amazing with it.”

In the sequel to Joker, Joaquin Phoenix makes his return as Arthur Fleck/Joker, and Zazie Beetz his as Sophie Dumond. With the additions of Catherine Keener (Get Out), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges), Jacob Lofland (Mud), y Harry Lawtey (Industry).

Pending details of the premise, it is known that the sequel It will have musical elements and is set in Arkham Asylum, which is where the first movie ends after Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) was sent there. The acclaimed JOKER (2019) by Phillips follows Arthur Fleck and his journey to becoming the crime clown, serving as the iconic villain's origin story, unfolding its plot in 1980s Gotham City.

Todd Phillips returns as co-writer and director. Phillips co-wrote the script with Scott Silver. They both co-wrote Joker (2019).

The Cinematographic Association (MPA; Motion Picture Association) awarded to Joker 2 R Rating by:

“Some strong violence, constant language, some sexuality and brief full nudity.”

This is the same rating as the original movie, Joker (2019), although for different reasons: “strong bloody violence, disturbing behavior, language and brief sexual images.”

SOME DATA:

• The literal translation of Folie à Deux is in English Madness for Two, and in Spanish Madness for two. But it is also a term for “shared psychosis” or “shared delusional disorder,” which fits like a glove in direct reference to Joker and Quinn.
• Joker is known for his on-again, off-again abusive relationship with Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at the Arkham Asylum mental institution, who falls in love with him and becomes his partner and partner in crime.
• Filming for the sequel began in early December 2022 in Los Angeles, CA. Production later moved to NYC, where it spent around three to four weeks filming. The sequel had been made official in November 2019.
• This is one of the few projects that has not suffered changes, cancellations or modifications after the merger of Warner Bros. Discovery (details here).
• Folie à Deux will exist outside of the DCU which is being worked on by James Gunn and Peter Safran, the co-presidents of DC Studios.

Joker: Folie à Deux opens in theaters on October 4, 2024.
