Diane Laddthe veteran actress known for her Oscar-nominated roles in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Wild at Heart, y Rambling Rose, as well as the classic Chinatowndied at the age of 89 at his home in California.

The unfortunate news was confirmed by his daughter, the actress, Laura Dern.

Dern shared the following press release this Monday, November 3:

“My incredible hero and mother, a true gift, Diane Ladd, passed away with me at her side this morning at her home in Ojai, California. She was the best daughter, mother, grandmother, actress, artist and compassionate soul I could have ever imagined.”

“We were lucky to have her. Now she flies with her angels.”

Ladd participated in more than 200 films and series. Was nominated for an Oscar three timesall in the category for best supporting actress: the first for Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore (1974) by Martin Scorsese, and the second and third by Wild at Heart (1990) by David Lynch, and Rambling Rose (1991) by Martha Coolidge, both co-starring her daughter. Laura Dern was also nominated for an Oscar for the latter, thus becoming, along with her mother, in one of only two father-daughter pairs nominated for Academy Awards for the same film. The other was Henry Fonda and Jane Fonda for On Golden Pond (1981).

Of Rambling Rose, Ladd often said:

“This was the movie that the deceased Princess Diana chose as her favoriteand took Laura and me to London for a royal premiere and party in our honor. And she sat between us, holding our hands, and crying, watching us perform.”

Early in his career, Ladd had small roles in television series such as Perry Mason, The Fugitive y Gunsmokewhile in the 70s he had a small role in Chinatown junto a Jack Nicholson.

In the 1980s, he appeared in the crime thriller Black Widowthe comedy sequel National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacationand the sitcom Alicebased on the aforementioned film Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. For this series he won the Golden Globe.

In the 90s he was part of the comedy Cemetery Clubwhere he reunited with Ellen Burstyn, his co-star in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore ; political comedy Primary Colorsalongside John Travolta; and Citizen Ruth by Alexander Payne, where she returned to play Dern's mother. In that decade he also received Emmy nominations for his work in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire y Touched by an Angel.

He continued starring alongside his daughter in the dramatic comedy Daddy and Them they Billy Bob Thornton, Inland Empire by David Lynch and the series Enlightened by Mike White and HBO. He also appeared alongside Sandra Bullock in 28 DaysAnthony Hopkins en The World’s Fastest Indian and as Jennifer Lawrence's adorable grandmother in Joy (2015) by David O'Russell.

Ladd also wrote and directed the comedy Mrs. Munckstarring herself and her ex-husband, Bruce Dern.

She was married three times, the first time to Bruce Dern from 1960 to 1969, the second time to William A. Shea Jr. from 1969 to 1977. She married her third husband, Robert Charles Hunter, in 1999. Hunter died in July of this year at age 77.

His latest television roles include Chesapeake Shores y Young Sheldon. the drama Isle of Hope (2022) was his last film role. It is in post-production Blue Champagne by Blaine Novak, which has not announced a release date.

He is survived by his daughter Laura Dern, and two grandchildren.
