On tour promoting his most recent film, Amsterdam, Margot Robbie reacted to the signing of Lady Gaga taking on the role of Harley Quinn in the sequel Joker: Madness for Two, confirmed last August by the singer and actress herself. Robbie was excited and “very happy” to see someone else embody the role of Harley, revealing that she always hoped that this character would be played by different talent, in the same way that it happens with characters like Macbeth or Batman.

In an interview with MTV News, Robbie says:

It makes me very happy, because I said from the beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters, [de la misma] how Macbeth or Batman always go from one great actor to another great actor. It’s like someone can do his Batman, or someone can do his Macbeth.”

“I feel that, in not many cases, they are female characters: Queen Elizabeth I, but beyond that, that I also had to try it, it was an honor to do it. I was like, ‘Wow! Cate Blanchett did Queen Elizabeth I. Now I can do it.’”

It’s such an honor to have built a solid enough foundation that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors try to play. And I think that [Gaga] will do something amazing with it“.

The video of the MTV News interview with Robbie is at the end of the story.

Robbie has played Harley Quinn in multiple projects, starting with Suicide Squad (2016) by David Ayer, emerging as one of the favorite things about said film, repeating the role in the solo film on the character. Birds of Prey (2020) by Cathy Yan, and later in The Suicide Squad (2021) by James Gunn.

Waiting to know details about the premise of the sequel to Joker, it is known that the project will have musical elements and it is believed that it will be set in the Arkham Asylumwhich is precisely where the first film ends after Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) is sent there.

And in case you missed it, we tell you a curious fact about the title of the sequel:

  • The literal translation of Folie à Deux is in English Madness for Two, and in Spanish madness for two. But it’s also a term for “shared psychosis” or “shared delusional disorder,” which could suggest a connection between Joker and Quinn.
  • Joker is known for his on-and-off abusive relationship with Harley Quinn, his psychiatrist at the mental institution known as Arkham Asylum, who falls in love with him and becomes his partner and partner in crime.

Todd Phillips resumes his duties as director. He also co-wrote the script with Scott Silver. They both co-wrote the Joker (2019).

Those confirmed for the cast at the moment include Joaquin Phoenix in his return as Arthur Fleck/Joker, and Gaga like a new version of Harley Quinn, Catherine Keener (Being John Malkovich, Get Out), Brendan Gleeson (In Bruges, Harry Potter, Mr. Mercedes), Zazie Beetz will return as Sophie Dumond, and Jacob Lofland in “secondary key role” as an inmate at the asylum who develops a relationship with Arthur.

Warner Bros. has set the theatrical release of the sequel for October 4, 2024. The filming is scheduled to give its initial clapperboard in November of this year.
