Paramount Pictures released this morning a new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with more looks at Shadow, a character who is making his film debut in the third installment of Sonic the Hedgehog of the director Jeff Fowler (director of the two previous installments).
Shadow is one of Sonic's enemies, considered in many ways the anti-Sonic.
It was created by Dr. Gerald Robotnik, grandfather of Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carrey). He was genetically modified with alien DNA, a speedster with teleportation powers. Shadow debuted in Sonic Adventure 2 2001. For his film debut, his voice will be provided by Keanu Reeves.
This third installment with a script written by Pat Casey, Josh Millery John Whittingtonwill explore new areas of the video game universe created by SEGA.
And as we can see in the trailer, Shadow appears carrying a weapon, making some nods to the 2001 spinoff video game.
Additionally, we see Shadow participating in Gerald Robotnik's evil plans, presumably as revenge for what happened to Maria, who we also see again in the trailer. The main divergence here is that Gerald is alive at the time of the story and meets his grandson, Ivo Robotnik (Eggman).
We also have to point out that joke at the beginning of the trailer, which establishes that Pokémon exists in Sonic's world. However, this seems to be more in the sense that Pokémon is also a multimedia franchise in Sonic's world, rather than there being any sort of crossover.

The cast features the returns of Carrey, Ben Schwartz lending his voice to Sonic, James Marsden like Tom Wachowski, Colleen O’Shaughnessey lending his voice to Tails, and Idris Elba a Knuckles. Con Tika Sumpter, Natasha Rothwell, Adam Pally y Lee Majdoub, Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Alyla Browne (Furious), James Cloud (Watchmen), Sofia Pernas (Jane the Virgin), Cristo Fernandez (Ted Lasso), y Jorma Taccone (Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) completing the cast. For the Spanish-speaking market in Latin America, Luisito Comunica returns lending his voice to Sonic.
Sonic the Hedgehog It has been a great commercial success for Paramount. The combined global box office of the first two films totals $870.8 million. It is not surprising then for a third film, and even a spinoff series focused on Knuckles which was already released by the streamer Paramount+.

Paramount Pictures releases Sonic 3 in theaters on December 20, 2024 in the US, and on December 25 in Mexico and the rest of Latin America.
