It’s been known for some time that it’s in the works, and now Disney is making it official by announcing the release date of its next live-action version of Moana with Dwayne Johnson. The film will be released on June 27, 2025one week before the previously announced date of July 2, 2025.
The news was a bit of a surprise, as most of the upcoming Disney movies being discussed today are having their release dates drastically pushed back due to the ongoing WGA strike – including many MCU releases, as well as the three upcoming sequels to the franchise Avatarall of which are being pushed back by a year or more.
The remake of Moana in live action is a high priority for the studio, with the massive success of the 2016 animated film Moana, as well as Disney’s blockbuster series remaking its range of animated classics as live-action movies.
But Moana It will be the first live-action Disney film in which one of the main voice actors from the animated version also plays the role in the live-action remake. Dwayne Johnson, who sang his musical numbers in the animated film, shouldn’t have any problem to bring Maui’s role to life in the live action version, just like he did in the animated version.
After the news that Auli’i Cravalho, the main voice of Moanawill not reprise his role in the live-action version, the main news about Moana yet to be determined is who will play the title character opposite Johnson.
