minutesOriginating from Chinese-American cuisine, this dish balances bold spices and rich umami flavors. The beef is typically marinated for tenderness and stir-fried to perfection, while the sauce, often soy-based, is seasoned with garlic, ginger, and freshly cracked black pepper for a satisfying kick. It’s commonly served over steamed rice or noodles, making it a hearty and delicious meal.
Ingredients
1 pound (450g) flank steak or sirloin, thinly sliced against the grain
2 tablespoons soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 bell peppers (1 red, 1 green), sliced into strips
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/4 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons oyster sauce (optional)
1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper (adjust to taste)
1/4 cup water or beef broth
1 teaspoon cornstarch (for thickening)
Directions
- In a bowl, mix the soy sauce and cornstarch to make a marinade. Add the sliced beef and toss to coat. Let it marinate for 15-20 minutes.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, vinegar, brown sugar, black pepper, water, and cornstarch. Set aside.
- Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat.
- Add the marinated beef in a single layer. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the beef from the pan and set aside.
- In the same skillet, heat another tablespoon of oil.
- Add the bell peppers, onion, garlic, and ginger. Stir-fry for 3-4 minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender but still crisp.
- Return the beef to the skillet. Pour the prepared sauce over the beef and vegetables.
- Stir to coat everything evenly. Let it simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
- Remove from heat and serve hot over steamed rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds or sliced green onions if desired.
