Maggie Gyllenhaal The filming of The Bride!, A new version of the classic The Bride of Frankensteinwhich will mark her second feature film as a director, after having made The Lost Daughter (2021).

The project of Warner Bros. features familiar faces from Gyllenhaal as part of the cast, as her husband, Peter Sarsgaard (Memory, The Batman), is playing a detective, and his brother Jake Gyllenhaal (Road House, Nightcrawler) in a role about which no further details have been given.

In an interview with Variety, Sarsgaard said he was happy to be working with his wife, and spoke for the first time about the role he is playing:

I love working with my wife. The particular role I am playing [en “La novia!”] It's the detective one“And I think she knew that a lot of the actors I liked as a kid were in film noir, and there were a lot of detectives. So she knew it would be fun for me.”

He's also a kind of haggard detective, who loves food, and that's definitely mine, Daddy CompostBut the way we work together, she doesn't really tell me much. She's someone who's wonderful at talking to actors, but the little things she says are really helpful.”

“I remember in ‘The Lost Daughter,’ I gave a speech behind a lectern. I was pretty nervous about that. I don’t really like speaking in front of people, like at awards ceremonies. So she gave me a scene where I was speaking in front of people, and she came up to me and said, ‘You don’t need the lectern.’ Because I kept holding on to it. She said, ‘Step away from the lectern.’ And I swear I felt like I had jumped off a ferry without a life jacket. Because it’s not about being comfortable when you’re acting, and I think other directors who don’t know me try to make me feel comfortable. But that’s not the way I act best. I like having a gun pointed at my head.”

In addition to directing The Bride!, Gyllenhaal is the screenwriter and producer.

He is in charge of a great cast that, in addition to Sarsgaard and his brother Jake, is made up of Christian Bale (Ford v Ferrari, The Dark Knight) like Frankenstein's Monster, Jessie Buckley (Men, I’m Thinking of Ending Things) as The Bride, Penelope Cruz (Ferrari, Vicky Cristina Barcelona) like Myrna, and Annette Bening (Nyad) y Julianne Hough (Safe Haven, Rock of Ages), in roles about which no further details have been given.

SYNOPSIS:

“A lonely Frankenstein travels to 1930s Chicago to seek Dr. Euphronius’ help in creating a mate for himself. The two revive a murdered young woman, and the Bride is born. She goes further than either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, police attention, and a wild, radical social movement.”

Emma Tillinger Koskoff, Talia Kleinhendler, and Osnat Handelsman-Keren produce alongside Gyllenhaal.

The original film by director James Whale was released in 1935. In recent times there have been several plans to launch a remake of Bride of Frankenstein. We remember the failed Dark Universe of Universal Pictures, as well as Bride A24 and Apple, with Scarlett Johansson, about which there has been no further news. On the other hand, Guillermo del Toro is working on a project about Frankenstein with house on Netflix.

WB premiere The Bride! September 26, 2025. The debut in functions will be included IMAX.
