science fiction dystopia Project Hail Marystarring Ryan Goslingofficially ended its run in theaters.
The 2026 box office is posting its best numbers since 2019 in its first quarter, projecting to become the best post-pandemic year. Undoubtedly, one of the films that have greatly contributed to the achievement is precisely Project Hail Mary de Amazon MGM Studios.
The film, based on Andy Weir's novel, is easily one of the most successful films of the year, breaking several box office records, including the highest-grossing film debut in Amazon MGM Studios' history with $80 million.
There was so much demand in cinemas from the public for performances of the one known in our region as End of the World Projectwhich the studio extended its theatrical window to two months, and delayed its arrival on digital platforms on demand (VOD), becoming a resounding success.
Project Hail Mary It is still being shown in a few movie theaters in our country, however, its run in American theaters has ended, and the impressive figure is as follows:
- Domestic box office: $334.8 million dollars
- International box office: $333 million dollars
- Global box office: $667.8 million dollars
The sci-fi epic surpassed the domestic box office of the Oscar winner, Oppenheimer (2023) by Christopher Nolan ($330 million), but it will not be able to surpass the global box office of this one, which was $975 million.
In addition, it became the highest-grossing film of a Weir novel, after surpassing The Martian (2015) by Ridley Scott at the box office, both nationally and worldwide ($630 million global).
The departure of end of the world project of movie theaters, means that it is now available to rent or buy on Video On Demand (VOD), to enjoy it once again – or for the first time – now from home.
It will later be available to all Prime Video subscribers. The date has not been confirmed at the moment.
Despite having a high budget of $200 million dollars, the film directed by Phil Lord y Christopher Miller (21 Jump Street, The LEGO Movie), ensured its commercial success by exceeding $500 million, a figure that, according to specialized media, marked the break-even point.
The plot, set in the near future, revolves around Ryland Grace (Gosling), a high school science teacher, with the not easy task of becoming a an unexpected hero with an impossible mission: save the world by embarking on an interstellar mission. His mission leads him to meet a mysterious alien nicknamed Rocky, who also seeks to save his own species.
In addition to Gosling, the main cast includes Sandra Hueller (Anatomy of a Fall), Lionel Boyce (The Bear), Ken Leung (Joker: Folie à Deux, Lost), Liz Kingsman (F1), y Milana Vayntrub (Monsters, This Is Us).
He wrote the script Drew Goddard (The Martian, Cabin in the Woods, Daredevil, World War Z), adapted from the novel of the same name by Andy Weir.
Goddard previously adapted the aforementioned Weir's other novel, The Martian (2015).
In the international market it was distributed by Sony Pictures.
The producers are Miller, Lord, Weir, Gosling, Amy Pascal, Aditya Sood and Rachel O'Connor. Goddard is executive producer alongside Patricia Whitcher, Sarah Esberg, Lucy Kitada, Nikki Baida, and Ken Kao.
