The universe of The Batman expands to television with the spinoff series of HBO, The Penguinwhose linear and in-depth premiere MAXis set for the September 19, 2024.

The series HBO Original focuses on Oz Cobblepot/Penguin, with the return of Colin Farrell in a starring role. Described as Batman's “epic crime saga,” it will expand and develop Batman's vision of Gotham City. Matt Reeves, while seeking to leave his mark on the crime genre.

One of the doubts that resonated most among the audience was whether Robert Pattinson would reprise his role as Batman in the series. Well, two weeks before the premiere of The Penguinwe have the answer from an official source.

The showrunner and head writer of the series, Lauren LeFranc told SFX magazine the following about Batman's absence (via Games Radar):

“I understand why people want to have Batman, or think that unless Batman is in a series or a movie, he doesn't have the same impact.”

“For me, I think it has a different impact. Matt's films are done through the lens of Batman, so you're up high, looking down on the city. It's a different perspective. With Oz, you're on the streets of the city, you're in the dirt and the mud and the grime. He's looking up, wanting to fight his way to the top.

“It’s a different experience,” he continues. “I think Gotham is an interesting enough city that it deserves to have more doors open inside it, and we can walk around and see what we think.”

Matt Reeveswho is executive producer of the series, joins the conversation explaining:

“I don't feel like it's missing anything fundamental. I feel like it's an extension of what's fundamentally there. We know this is Batman's world.”

“You’re going down a different path. So the spectre of Batman is there,” he says. “The spectre of the Riddler is there. The spectre of everything that happens in the last movie is there. It informs it. And it’s exactly where we start.”

The plot is set a week after the climax of the film. The Batman. The story will explore Oswald Cobblepot's place in the criminal underworld as Batman becomes a bigger threat to Gotham City's villains.

In the events of the film, The Penguin served as a lieutenant to crime boss Carmine Falcone (John Turturro in The Batman), who meets an untimely end. In the series, Penguin is stepping up to lead crime in Gotham City.

In addition to Farrell, the cast includes Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs, Made For Love), giving life to Sofia Falcone, daughter of Carmine Falcone (Turturro), Theo Rossi (Sons of Anarchy, Emily the Criminal), Carmen Ejogo (The Crowded Room, Your Honor), Michael Kelly (Jack Ryan, House of Cards), Shohreh Aghdashloo (Renfield), Deirdre O’Connell (Daredevil, The Affair), Rhenzy Happy, Clancy Brown (Dexter), y Michael Blessing (The Marvelous Mrs Maisel).
