The 94th edition of Oscar award from Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences; dregs)took a 180 turn when Will Smith went on stage to deliver an open hand blow to the presenter’s face Chris Rocknot sympathizing with a joke that the comedian made about the wife of the now Oscar winner, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
The question that many of us asked ourselves since we were watching the ceremony was, why does the Academy allow Will Smith to stay inside the Dolby Theater after having physically and verbally assaulted a colleague? In addition, what will the disciplinary measures be? What will be taken in the case?
In a statement sent to the media, the AMPAS sheds light on these two points. First, after deliberating for a few days and having launched an investigation into what happened on the night of Sunday, March 27, 2022, the Oscar Academy confirmed on Wednesday, March 30, that they were beginning “disciplinary proceedings” against Will Smith:
“The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conductincluding inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.”
Second, Academy claims Will Smith was asked to leave the 2022 Oscars ceremony after attacking host Chris Rock, and Smith refused to leave, admitting that they could have “handled the situation differently.” The Academy also apologized to Rock for how the night went.
The full statement sent to the media is as follows:
“The Board of Governors today initiated disciplinary proceedings against Mr. Smith for violations of the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, including inappropriate physical contact, abusive or threatening behavior, and compromising the integrity of the Academy.
In accordance with the Academy’s Standards of Conduct, as well as California law, Mr. Smith is given at least 15 days advance notice of his violations and sanctions, and an opportunity to be heard in advance via a written response. At the next board meeting on April 18, the Academy may take any disciplinary action, which may include suspension, expulsion, or other sanctions permitted by statute and rules of conduct.
Mr. Smith’s actions at the 94th Academy Awards were a deeply shocking and traumatic event to witness in person and on television. Mr. Rock, we apologize for what he experienced on our stage and we appreciate his resilience at that time. We also apologize to our nominees, guests, and viewers for what happened during what should have been a celebration event.
Things unfolded in a way that we could not have anticipated. While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize that we could have handled the situation differently.”
